This is a crazy stat I ran into:

@TJAltimore
HIGHLY CONCENTRATED CFB VIEWERSHIP:
2016-23 Total Nielsen-Rated Viewers
Check this out, gang:
50% of football viewership comes from just 18 teams
In updating TV data to add in this year, I continue to be amazed by how heavily concentrated viewers are among so few brands.

Not a dig. Really surprised A&M not on that list.
I'm guessing they are the next team (19th) since it is an SEC team.

The new B12 has 0 of the top 18. Anyone can see where the TV money is, SEC and B10.

It’s actually worse than this if you only look at the regular season figures.
Many of the above teams are helped out by playing on a certain stage such as a Playoff game… a stage that was responsible for the viewers, not necessarily the team.
For example, Liberty vs Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl drew 4.7 million viewers. But it’s not like Liberty drew those numbers. The fact that it was a NY6 bowl game is what drew those numbers. Not the brand of the team.
If you look at just the regular season, Washington comes in 27th in viewership during this time frame, not 14th as they list them.
If you look at just the regular season, it’s actually just 13 brands, not 16, that garner 50% of all TV Viewers.
2016-2023 Regular Season Only % of all CFB viewership by brand:
1. Alabama- 6.26%
2. Ohio State- 6.12%
3. Michigan- 5.26%
4. Notre Dame- 4.13%
5. Georgia- 3.86%
6. LSU- 3.57%
7. Penn State- 3.35%
8. Auburn- 3.33%
9. Oklahoma- 3.16%
10. Florida- 2.96%
11. Texas- 2.96%
12. Clemson- 2.63%
13. Tennessee- 2.59%
Cumulative % of the Top 13 is 50.19%
FYI, A&M comes in at #14, Arkansas at #21, Ole Miss at #22.

I am surprised Alabama is on this list considering half the state doesn't have electricity yet.

Regular season only, Wisconsin is 17th and Washington is 27th. Also USC is #18 and Oregon #20.
All of these are inflated by playing on big stages such as conference title games and bowl games that would have drawn larger viewership no matter the team.
Also, Clemson is just 12th in regular season viewership. This list has them 5th, no doubt boosted by playing in National Title games that again, would have drawn those numbers (or larger) no matter the team.

I don’t know about Washington but Wisconsin always has a huge betting handle each week. Apparently gamblers love the badgers

Texas viewership will skyrocket once they drop their 2-3 Longhorn Network games

What % of viewership comes from the total SEC and B1G combined?
Posted on 1/24/24 at 12:34 pm to OU Guy
Maybe because those are the teams that get the primetime slots every week?

Other than Colorado and Navy this looks about right. Drop Navy for certain because they aint playing the same game. Thats 31. Add UCLA cause LA, probably Wisconsin, UNC, Maybe Minnesota and possibly a few from NC State, VT, UVA, and Maryland and that is probably about what a 36 team super league looks like. 4 - 9 game divisions.
