There is just no realistic way to compare the greatest players across positions. But to say that Thomas is a serious candidate for that label is not a joke.
I understand you can't compare positions that easily, but the biggest difference is the impact that an offensive player can make compared to one defensive player. One defensive player cannot win you games, or carry you to national championships. The best offensive players can. I definitely think Thomas is a top 3 defensive player in the SEC all time, but to say he is the greatest overall player is a little ridiculous to me.

Yep. He was fantastic/superb. However, he's not even the best D player to ever play in the SEC.
He is up there with the all-time great SEC defensive players. Arguments could be made for about 10 players I'm sure. Of course you could make a case that Derrick Thomas is only the third best LB to play for Alabama. Lee Roy Jordan, Cornelius Bennett, and Derrick Thomas could all be argued for spots 1-3 just on that list. Very hard to give superlatives for things like this.
As for individual seasons, Derrick Thomas' 1988 season is DEFINITELY one of the most dominating by a defensive player in college football history though.

DT 1988 for D=Cam 2010 for O

Lee Roy was the best bama LB, IMO. Reggie White is the most dominant D player in my life, IMO.

A RB has to rely on other players (offensive linemen) to do great things. But I agree Hershel was a beast.
However Derrick Thomas did win games at Bama almost single handedly. In 1988 he had 9 Qb hurries, 3 sacks and a safety against penn st in a game alabama won 8-3

Two of my fellow Alabama fans believe that Lee Roy Jordan was a better linebacker than Derrick Thomas? Give me the reasons why, please.

Great news...long overdue.

here's a whole other mess of problems
they weren't playing a similar linebacker role and they weren't even really playing the same game as Lee Roy was on a one platoon football team

I don't necessarily think he was the better linebacker. Derrick Thomas could do things that Lee Roy Jordan just couldn't do athletically. Completely different eras of college football. However, for his time (according to historians - I don't have personal recollection since I'm not that old), Lee Roy Jordan was as dominant.
I honestly think it goes 1. Thomas 2. Bennett 3. Jordan. Alabama has a ridiculous number of great LBs in its history.

DT will become the 4th LB from Bama to make the College Football HOF; Lee Roy Jordan, Cornelius Bennett, Woodrow Lowe, and DT.
Texas A&M fans should remember DT from the Hurricane Bowl in 1988, 5 sacks and a recovered fumble; Bama won 30-10.

If not greatest overall, is he the consensus greatest SEC defensive player of all time?
On the short list in that conversation, but with guys like Reggie White also on the list, he can't be consensus.

Their selection process is a joke. Tommie Frazier and Danny Wuerffel didn't get in until last year.

Walker was great and by the eye test, he and Bo are right there as the best players to ever play in the SEC, but his statistics are nothing to bat an eye at compared to other running backs in SEC history.
No one will ever touch DT's sack stats.
If someone were to say that Thomas Davis was the best defensive player in the SEC of all time their would be so many Bama fans in that thread within 30 seconds saying how stupid a statement that is that it would crash this site.
well that is how stupid your post is.
