The biggest reason this blew up, however, isn't the money. That's not going away and people need to get over it. The problem is the portal. Unrestricted annual free agency is what's going to be the death of the sport unless it's reined in. Fix that and the problem is solved.

It’s mainly the agents who are screwing things up. They are treating College players like they would professional athletes.
They are peddling players to different universities and encouraging them to go with the highest bidder, everything else be damned. Easy to sway young minds and their greedy handlers.

Rein in the portal ... again, IMO that is the biggest problem, not the fact of players getting paid ... and those roaches will have to scurry somewhat back under the cabinet.

Sometimes the system is so broken that laughing is about all you can do while you wait for it to change. Hope congress and NIL governance can save the sports we love, but I’m a bit skeptical.
