I don't know that the offense has to be "great" to win a championship. I wouldn't characterize Michigan's offense last year as "great" -- they just did enough to win.

They also had one of the best defenses that probably only ranks behind the 2021 UGA defense in the last 5 years.

I freely admit I'm projecting my hopes on Simpson based on how he seemed to operate the offense in 2024. Not overly explosive, but seemingly less herky-jerky than the offense was when Milroe was the QB.

The closest analog in my mind was when Mac Jones was pressed into service for the last two games in 2019 after Tua got hurt vs. Mississippi State. Jones doesn't have the pure talent of Tua, and he got much of the blame for the Auburn loss, but even then you could see his ability. And in 2020 he showed what he could do.

I'm not saying Ty Simpson will have the equivalent of the Mac Jones 2020 campaign. I think it's possible, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.

However, I DO think he's going to be an upgrade at the QB position from a decision-making and processing standpoint, and that alone would make us much more efficient offensively.

I think it's okay to hope Simpson is the guy. I hope he balls out and is great, but 5-10 for 71 yards that included the 43 yard prayer that should have been picked against Mercer doesnt scream great to me.

I think anyone would be an upgrade at QB from those standpoints, but if he tries to force the ball constantly and rely on his arm then he will turn the ball over more than Milroe did. I think thats the main reason why Saban wasnt a fan of Simpson is that he has too much of that gun slinger in him, and his arm isnt as good as he thinks it is.

To be fair, Simpson was playing behind the second-string offensive line, throwing to Rico Scott, Caleb Odom, Jaren Hamilton, and others. One of his incompletions was dropped by Daniel Hill, one was dropped in the end zone (but was thrown into double coverage, so not a great decision), and another was thrown while he was flushed from the pocket and under pressure.

That pass to Mack to Uncle Rico was nice. It is like that ball came from a quarter mile away. I feel like the dudes will be stars one day. Maybe soon.

Y'all act like coaches don't see these guys every day in practice or hear from position coaches.

This is the most untested group of QBs we've had since 2014 and 2016. Other than those 2 years Bama has known who the starter should be going into the season (more or less) every year since the late 1990s.

2014 - Lost a 3 year starter, 2 time national champ Heisman runner up. Looked like it would be Jake Coker but Sims won the job.

2016 - Nobody who had thrown a pass in 2015 was in the running in 2016. It was between Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts, neither of whom played the year before.

Each of those teams won the SEC title and was close to a national title.

This feels different though.

Yes feels like we have 3 QBs that can win the Natty all with different styles. Fran Tarketain, Dan Marino, and Steve McNair all in the same college QB room about to battle it out. Things are going to be awesome.

Yep, Alabama is going to have a QB room with all 3 guys making double-digit millions in NIL. No way they all stay for 2026.

I bet the difference is those two teams were coached by Nick Saban with among the finest staffs he assembled while coaching in Tuscaloosa.

I'm not trying to be mean spirited. I've just decided that I'm never going to compare anything happening today to years when we had the greatest to ever do it in the modern era at head coach, no NIL, and no unlimited free agency. It might as well be a different sport but it is definitely a completely different Alabama program at a bare minimum.

Did anyone see this from DeBoer, I must have missed it if it's been shared on this board.

As a junior, he threw for 2,689 yards and 29 touchdowns adding an additional eight touchdowns rushing and 378 yards. In 2020 as a senior, he passed for 1,136 yards and 13 touchdowns. Keelon had 4100 yards and 55 TDs…. Keelon is way better than Milroe was in highschool.

That is fantastic to read. Thanks for taking the time to look that up and post.

Given the latest news with the OC.... Like I said, I'd be real surprised if Mack doesn't start.

Ty Simpson is the next starting quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

I do not understand why people still hype this guy up or think he's a lock to start. He has never looked that impressive in garbage time and couldn't beat out Milroe. He may still end up winning the starting job but he's going against our highest-rated recruit ever and a QB this staff loved at Washington.

I don't remember hearing too much hype around Ty outside coachspeak and he's not exactly flashing the future starting QB vibes like Tua did as a freshman.

I'll never understand why some of y'all are so bad at evaluating talent. It's like all you can do is look at a stat sheet and ignore all context.

He HAS looked very good in his limited playing time, especially if you take into account the circumstances when he did play.

Is he definitely, 100% going to be the starter? No, but if had to bet, he'd be the easy choice.

Wut? Even if you're talking about QB'S only, that's incorrect.

Per 247 he is the highest rated recruit we've signed. He beat out Bryce .9998 to .9994. Not that it means anything.

One thing that will never change... The most popular player on the team is almost always the incoming freshman QB.
