ATL Airport parking rate increase

Pretty big rate increase across the boards. I like how they compare their parking prices to two of the most densely packed cities in the US in LA and NY JFK.

re: Any issues with a man in 40's taking creatine?
Posted by DeoreDX on 4/7/25 at 1:18 pm
Our muscles use ATP to perform work. We store a very limited amount of ATP and quickly burn through that. We have three metabolic pathways generate the additional ATP required to perform an exercise. The phosphagen, glycolytic pathway, and the oxidative pathway. We are pretty familiar with the glycolytic pathway(muscle glycogen and carbs etc) and oxidative (fat burning) pathways. In the first moments of muscle activation before the glycolytic and oxidative energy systems fire up and get running we have the phosphagen pathway which uses phosphocreatine to reform ATP. We can generate a lot of power through this energy system but is limited by how much phosphocreatine we store in our bodies. This is where the Creatine monohydrate comes in. The body uses water to transport the creatine into your muscles so the first few weeks you take creatine you may gain a little weight in the form of additional water weight stored in the muscles. Stomach issues are associated with dehydration of the intestinal track if too much creatine is taken and not enough water is in the body to transport it to the muscles (this is where the bad constipation can come in) This water weight also has the side benefit of making your muscles feel "bigger" so some people confuse extra water mass in the muscle as muscle gain. The extra strength is from taking full use of the phosphagen energy pathway. This allows you to lift more weights longer and therefor improve your total work volume to more rapidly gain muscle. The cognitive benefits of Creatine are also measurable. The brain uses a large portion of the energy our bodies use in a given day, some say as much as 30%. Rapid energy availability to the brain via the phosphate energy pathway is believed to be the reason for the increase of cognitive functions with creatine. This shows up as increased memory recall and more rapid decision making. I've taken it for the last couple of years mainly for the cognitive benefits. I can really tell how much better my memory recall is when I am on it. I've not seen studies that say 10-20mg is more optimal. The 3-5mg a day covers most ordinary people. I have read studies that base the optimal creatine intake based on total mass. It makes sense that a larger person with more muscle mass who activates the phosphagen energy pathway more often during the day could benefit from additional Creatine. I have read a 0.1g/kg recommendation before for non-obese people. I don't recall where I read that from but that would put me at ~7.5g at my 165lbs weight.

I was in HS in the early 90's living in Kingsport but going to school at Cental and went to several ETSU games Mister Jenning's Jr and Senior year. I forgot all about him until your post. Brings back a lot of memories.

re: Bike rack for tahoe recommendation

I've owned a 5 bike Velocirax the last 2 years. Stays on my vehicle 24/7. It's heavy as hell and not something you will want to constantly take on and off.
Has held up great. Some of the rubber tire straps are starting to crack and I'll need to order some replacements soon. I need a 4 bike carrier and I like how the bikes don't stick out as far behind the vehicle. I also have Kuat 2 bike rack and it's served me well also. I have this odd fear that I will fumble the bike on the Kuat and punch a hole in my back windshield with a MTB flat bar one day as the Rev grips I use on a couple of my bikes have aluminum end caps/

Did the Horse in Neverending Story get mentioned yet?

Not a movie but Oberyn Martell in GoT. I knew it was coming from the books and it still was tough to watch.

re: VO2 Max results after my Garmin froze last week

It's very possible to have improved your aerobic base and not improve or even lose VO2Max. To improve VO2Max you have to do really high intensity work. I spent most of last year improving my aerobic base while not doing much if any high intensity workouts and improved my FTP but didn't improve my VO2Max. As I build up into the race season I've done a lot of high intensity intervals and I've seen my VO2 max as estimated by Garmin and Intervals.icu jump from around 43 to 46-47. in 6 weeks of work.
re: Do you eat off of paper plates at your house each day?
Posted by DeoreDX on 2/11/25 at 7:19 am
We have paper plates. Only 3 of us in the house so rarely do I need to use a paper plate. Sometimes I do when there are plenty of ceramic plates and I can't explain why. Many times it's at lunch (work form home) and the dishwasher is full. It's the kiddo's job to empty the dishwasher so I'll make a sandwich or wrap and eat it off a paper plate or napkin instead of putting a dirty dish in the sink. Sometimes I grab one for no good reason other than my state of mind and the meal I'm eating feels like it belongs on a paper plate.
re: I want a stainless 357 mag wheel gun, stuck on barrel length choice

Looks like $1k + tax will get me a King Cobra or a 686. I honestly don't know anything about the Colts. $900 will get me a Ruger. Taurus looks to be in the $500-700 range. Not sure of the differences between all the various Taurus. I still think of a GP100 as a $400-500 gun. The problem with doing most of my gun buying in the early 2000's. Several brands I know of as cheap budget brands also in the $400-500 range. Rossi. EAA. Charter. Where is the sweet spot for quality for the $$ nowadays? Taurus's wheel gun reputation better now than it was in the 2k's?

Sounds like 4" is the unanimous selection.
2nd part of the question now. Ported barrels worth looking at in a 357?

I want a stainless 357 mag wheel gun, stuck on barrel length choice

Biggest gun regret I've ever made was selling my nickel plated S&W 686 20 years ago. Now I want a replacement. I want a medium frame stainless steel 357 mag revolver. No real use case. Will probably be the truck gun when we go out west offroading in the back country more for 4 legged protection than 2. Might be a ruger? Could be a S&W? Could be a Taurus? Depends on what I find locally. But I can't decide what barrel length I want. I love 6-6.5" cause, well, they just look really good. The long sight radius is great and extra weight can help tame the recoil. 4-4.5" might be more practical take up less space and be easier to holster if I decide to keep it on the hip in the back country. What's your favorite length for your 357 mag revolvers?

the wildly overpriced Yeti fad,
Did Yeti turn into a high end designer company sure. But I don't let that discount how their price and reputation was built. In the mid/late 2000's when the OG bear proof indestructible Yeti cooler came out there was nothing like it on the market. They identified a need in the outdoor enthusiast market and designed and built a highly specialized boutique niche product that served the needs of their target audience and took a risk introducing the product to market. It was a $200-$300 cooler when all the other mass market coolers on the market were $30. When you are in the back country away from civilization in bear country for 4-5 days they are worth their weight in gold and money becomes no object. Did it eventually turn into "My rich uncle has a $300 he uses for hunting and it's badass, I want to get one for the back of my truck to hold beer and cokes!" Sure. But I don't let that discount how Yeti innovated in that space. Not even a fanboy, but I was first amazed at their coolers in 2010 when we first went rock crawling on the Rubicon Trail and one of the guys had a Yeti and had cold food for all 4 days while our stuff was water logged from melted ice after 2 days.

Put the fat tires back on my drop bar single speed gravel bike. Threw on a friction shifter and old 9 speed cassette. Took her out in the snow.

People buy one or the other? I use both liberally. Unsalted for cooking, salted in the butter dish on the counter for spreading.
