I am looking for a suggestion for a no-frills sandwich shop—the standard old stuff such as BLT, ham and cheese, etc. Everything I find in looking online is trendy with huge sandwiches that contain almost everything but the kitchen sink.

We are going through town Saturday to visit some friends in North Georgia and planned to stop in Athens for lunch.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

McAllister’s Deli or Subway. Otherwise you’re gonna get trendy.

All the decent places like Yudis and Gyro Wrap are gone. South Kitchen or Trapeze have decent stuff but probably aren’t what you’re looking for.

Clocked would be where I would go if you’re looking for an Athens place.

I miss Steverinos and Sons of Italy. They had the best subs.

I was a fan of Abilene Icehouse/Blind Pig.

Maybe it was because I was drunk, poor, and hungry, but those hot Italian Stevorinos subs were money.

Gyro Wrap is back, on college Ave (not the same dingy place we all knew and loved but gets the job done).

Best sub style IMO is at Little Italy. Trapeze has some pretty good stuff but it’s gonna be on a bun and by no means traditional.

Little Italy

Definitely - with a cheap pitcher of beer and sorostitute watching. Although it’s summer

I’d also add Barberitos for best burrito

Still miss Gumby’s Pokey Stix at 2:30am the most.

Clayton St Deli in 1997. Time machine parking on the roof.

Gyro Wrap was always good. Herbies was a fun spot at 2am. I never ate there sober, but I feel like it was good.

Man, back in the mid 90s there used to be a place called East Clayton deli owned by native New Yorker. It was the best. No frills at all but I swear that man put a pound of meat on his sandwiches. I used to get his corned beef with Swiss on rye. Best deli I have ever frequented.

Damn Deeprig already mentioned it. Glad somebody else remembers.

And he got the name right. Clayton Street Deli not East Clayton Deli.
