Why has A&M always been a mediocre program?

They consistently have been ranked in the top 5 football programs for most money invested. They have invested hundreds of millions into their facilities as well as millions into buying recruit. Yet, despite that, they still remain as a program that’s massively underachieved. You have all these world-class facilities, an amazing locker room, a huge stadium, and yet only 1 trophy from pre-WW2. Why?

When your whole ethos is kooky/weird you don't tend to get top level athletes to want to be there natively so you have to pay them and when that is the case you get mercenaries with no loyalty and just wanted the payday.
It's literally hardwired into their DNA

Forget about the homo culture there. Does it more to do with the fact that their boosters have way too much control?

Those are the most expensive 8 wins year in and year out

Because they are a Texas school who the national media has propped up for decades as always better than they are when in reality they are certainly not.

Southwest Conference:
Texas - Oldest Brother
Arkansas - Middle Child
Texas A&M - Baby Brother
It doesn't matter how hard the younger brother tries, he'll always lose to his older brothers. It's the natural design of the universe.

It all comes down to coaching.

The Longhorns have the same fricking problem with the boosters and that has definitely been part of our achilles heel until the Texas One Fund came along and we seem to have an AD who doesn't give too much of a frick. With that said we step on our dicks... regularly just not all the fricking time so the kooky/weird/mercenary thing has to be the grim reaper for TAMU IMHO.

A&M gets plenty of talent. They just don’t do a great job developing them.

Well I guess that has been a issue for over 40 years.

The serious answer to this question is that A&M has always, going back 50 years, struggled to put together a consistent passing game.
The only two years in recent memory that they had one (Johnny Manziel), they were one of the best teams in the country.

I think it’s like this. You put money into a college football program, and that moves it up to some level. More money, moves it up another level.
But every level has other teams you have to compete against. To win at a level, there’s some things a team has to have that are more about coaching, leadership, aligning all players to the mission, excellence, toughness, etc. Money doesn’t buy all that.
But, if you have all that and no money, you just win at a lower level. So you have to have both.
If UL put a Billion dollars into their football program, they’d move up a level from the Sunbelt.
But, that still doesn’t mean they’d win at the higher level.
If UL got a coach and players to all pull together, they’d just win the Sunbelt — they haven’t put the money into their program to compete and recruit at the higher level.
A&M is just …. A&M. There’s something about the place that is anathema to the attitudes that make for strong high quality football teams. And they spent money to compete at a very high level. So both work against them.
Only A&M could get it so wrong.

all schools boosters have control, A&M's historically fight against each other and wont support the other's head coach choice.
You have a school that grows from a small all male military school and is surrounded by texas, ou, arkansas, and lsu all the while texas is doing everything to get the NCAA to nuke the A&M program.

4 seasons with 11 or more wins...
1992: Probation enforced starting 1994
1939: Last NC
1998: Last CC
2012: Last Heisman

I honestly have no idea. They have great facilities, great fanbase, great recruiting grounds, strong alumni support, and top 5 money program but t just can’t crack mediocre.
As someone suggested, at first glance I’d guess there’s too many inmates (rich alums) running the asylum, but the reality is that all big programs suffer from this.
I think they panicked when they fired Jimbo though, which was a reaction to Texas winning Big 12 and coming into the SEC with some momentum. And so the wheel continues to turn.

WTF are you talking about?
Honestly I think this is their problem, as a fanbase and admin they literally live their existence with Texas the boogeyman constantly in their heads.

And if you toss out the probation laced paying players for work they didn't do bit they have 3 11 win seasons.
Spurrier did that from 2011-13 at South Carolina
Missouri has 4 such seasons since joining the SEC
Auburn has done it 6 times with 5 different coaches
Phat Phil did it 4 times at Tenner
You get the drift...
