I agree.....even as an Auburn fan I felt so bad for Scissum - that is a tough one to live with.

Terry was a great offensive mind and probably should have just been an OC after being fired by AU. Only had 1 real bad year but it was literally the first year he didnt have at least some of Dye's recruits. He let Bobby fill up our recruiting classes with a bunch of talented guys that he wouldnt personally take at FSU. Surprisingly, most of those guys were coke heads. He also partied all the time and possibly had a affair with the most prominent booster's daughter. That will get you fired every time.

1997 Ed Scissum fumble Iron Bowl

quote:Good catch. I looked for a 1994 UNA schedule and couldn't find one to verify that I was remembering correctly.
UNA had their big run 1993-95 when they won three consecutive D2 championships under Bobby Wallace. Their only loss during that period was to Youngstown State and not Alcorn.
Found it on Youngstown State's 1994 schedule:
October 8 North Alabama W 17–14
Youngstown State defeated Boise State that year for the 1AA title.

Bowden resigned during the season. Apparently he was told nothing would save his job and he quit.

Bruce Arians made that play-call.

It was the worst play call in the history of sports, and Bruce Arians should have been fired before he left the field. Scissum had touched the ball 16 times all season long to that point and that play was the first and only time he touched the ball from scrimmage that night. A run play + punt gives the ball back to Auburn deep in their own territory with about 35 seconds to go, needing to drive the field with only one timeout.

I had no idea Tater Tot coached at UNA.
He took over when Mark Hudspeth left to join Mullins' staff with MSU.
He was there for three years and tried to rent a championship with a bunch of D-I transfers. He never got past the quarterfinals.
Bobby Wallace, who won three national championships there in the 90s, came back and re-established their actual recruiting of freshman and built the team that tanisitioned to FCS.

Buster Brown. never thought we'd see him again.
Those Iron bowls while he was at Auburn, every one was a friggin classic. I think the scores were
1993- Auburn 22-14
1994-Bama- 21-14
1995- Auburn 31-27
1996-Bama- 24-23
1997-Auburn 18-17
Every one of those games went to the final second with the losing team with the ball and a chance.

Only time I ever met him IRL was in Florence. I was home on leave eating at a Chinese place (Rice Box) with my dad before heading back overseas, and he and another UNA coach were next to us.
He was personable enough. He started a conversation with my dad and I. Told a lot of stories, some were funny most were just subtle bragging and bullshitting.
I hadn't seen him in person in years, and I was just blown away at his weight gain at the time. He looked every bit as wide as he was tall.
He did bring in a lot of talent to UNA, but didn't manage to do much with it. His best year was probably his 1st with a good Hudspeth recruited and coached team. The talent he brought in never really did much as a team. Just a bunch of talented, self-interested individuals.

Auburn fired him?
I guess if you call Bowden quitting the night before the homecoming game against La Tech "being fired", then they did.

I felt so bad for Ed… and I’ve had a strong dislike for Ariens since.
