Was watching the game last night and just wondering if there is any particular history/tradition/connection behind the Tennessee orange. Not trolling or anything here, but it’s a unique shade and I don’t think anyone in college football has the same color so was just curious.

Watching your game vs the Sooners is going to feel like a rerun now.

Our president of the university in 1889 at our first field day seen daisies on campus that were the colors orange, and the pedals white. That’s a simple explanation of where it sprouted

I dunno, TX-OU is one of those games where the best team on paper doesn’t always win. I do like our chances though; OU defense looked stout and made it a game but offense really struggled.

Wow I would’ve never guessed that. Are the flowers still in the area?

They can’t run, and struggled vs the run. Will always be a line of scrimmage league. A lot of SEC teams have good DLs this year, NFL talent. That’s the most important thing to control in a game imo.

I’m not so sure they grow naturally anymore on campus but we have spots where they are self grown. Truthfully it’s more of a yellow color than orange

They were native wildflowers to the area. I’ve seen them in various places on campus.

What’s the story behind the Texas orange? I’m in Austin all the time and when I wear a Tennessee shirt I stick out big time hahaha

The story I heard is that in the 1880’s some girls went to a game with orange ribbons and it kinda stuck. I know for awhile they were actually a combo of maroon and orange but in the 1920s they officially made it orange and white. I think it used to be brighter as well but they were aware that Tennessee was also orange so wanted to differentiate. I guess the burnt orange is also closer to color of longhorn cattle. Anyway nothing as specific what was behind Tennessee color, just kinda evolved and I guess everyone liked it so it stuck.

I do know it was a Texas cheerleader in the 50s or 60s that first made the Hookem Horns hand signal. Pretty sure it was an OU fan to do the first “”Horns down” signal! Heh

Interesting! I always enjoy history especially about college football. I enjoy Austin a lot I usually go to pluckers before the games
