ESPN article about a UGA transfer mentions portal
Backup players on playoff bound teams that are unhappy with their situations can leave for a new team during a playoff run. I can’t fathom how anyone thought this timing would be a good idea. Besides the early signing period, coaches have the added distraction of trying to hold the team together while preparing for the post season.

Considering that the expanded playoffs have drastically changed the postseason schedule, I’d say it’s a pretty new situation. First round games are like 10 days after this. Trying to recruit your roster is a rather big distraction for a staff trying to prepare for an elimination game.
