Finally some positive news this week in Knoxville.

Following a run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2023, Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White announced that he has extended Tennessee basketball head coach Rick Barnes' contract through the 2027-28 season.
Dating to the start of the 2017-18 season, Tennessee leads all SEC programs in total wins with 144. Barnes was the 2019 Naismith College Coach of the Year after guiding Tennessee to a school-record-tying 31 wins and a Sweet Sixteen appearance. The Vols also authored a program-record 19-game win streak, logged three wins over top-five opponents and spent a month ranked atop both major top-25 polls.

During eight seasons under Barnes, the Vols are 108-22 (.831) at Food City Center. Twice during the Barnes era, UT has posted a perfect record at home, going 18-0 in 2018-19 and 16-0 in 2021-22.

Barnes is steadily approaching the 800-win mark, currently standing at 779 career coaching victories.

I mean as long as you are cool with playing at or below your seed in the NCAA tournament with no shot of ever winning it all.... Good on ya

But will he ever win in the tourney? Dude is the ultimate choke artist.

He is better than what we have had prior to Pearl and after Pearl. I rather make the NCAA tournament every year and have a chance than not make it at all.

Didn’t he wax Texas head to head last match up? Since leaving Texas, Barnes has consistently won and been in the NCAA tournament. Texas on the other hand has not been so successful during that same rime frame.

Barnes has been a head coach in college basketball since the Reagan administration. He has had elite players and tremendous resources. He has as many national titles as I do.

Where's your multi-million dollar contract then?

Maybe we should hire Chris Beard, who also has the same amount of titles as you

Too late, he’s at Ole Miss.

I harbor no ill will towards Rick he's just not clutch in the NCAA tournament. Our college basketball history is not much to write home about but I'll take it over yours....

It's Tennessee basketball. Of course they're OK with it.

You may want to revisit his last 8 years at Texas vs the eight since his departure. Barnes couldn't get past RD 2 his last 7 years, it was time for a change.

This post is timely. We should be getting baseball predictions from Serraneaux before the week is out.

But doesn’t Barnes have a winning record over Cal since coming to UT? Barnes has won as much as call has since 2019 with less talented recruits. Y’all keep pulling on those #1 classes and keep doing nothing with them

Not near as depressing as 40-13 on your own field

And what does your success look like since he’s been gone?
