Nearly 15 years on, this might be the most consequential game in collegiate sports history

The November 5, 2011, match-up between #1 LSU and #2 Alabama in Bryant-Denny Stadium was a titanic defensive struggle between what were inarguably the two best teams in college football that year. In hindsight, because of what happened in the immediate aftermath of this game, I think it goes without saying that this match ended up having ramifications of historical proportions.

21-0 makes that game irrelevant

Most intense game pound for pound ive ever watched. Every single inch was earned.

Ford was in bounds fwiw. Waited 15 years to say this.

It got labeled boring immediately after the fact but truly - it was two elite defenses going toe to toe.
I don’t remember a game comparable during the Saban era. Even Florida in 08 and 09 - it was back and forth. Game of the Century was stressful because neither defense gave an inch.

I thought immediately it was the best, most evenly matched game I had ever watched.

The January 9th, 2012 rematch had a bigger impact on this place.

OM fans would certainly recognize irrelevancy. When was the last time you guys won a title in football?

I was in the Alabama student section for that game. Epic.

I watched it at a friend's house with a fairly even mix of LSU and Alabama fans. It was intense.

I was at the game behind the field goal with the game winner in overtime.
Best, most intense, game I have ever seen.
However, how did this game have consequences of historical proportions other than haunt LSU fans after the rematch (if the fricking Okie St kicker)?

Before black people were allowed to play.
Classic Ole Miss story.

I’m not one who typically blows things out of proportion but the collective national fury over the LSU/Bama rematch that year clearly lead to the playoff expansion and the move to selection of the teams via committee in lieu of the computers. The committee was literally established explicitly to lessen the SEC’s dominance in the postseason as a result of LSU/Bama that year.

I am in agreement with those who say that 21-0 neutered this game historically, but I will say that it had the most "big game" feel of any I have ever attended. Campus that day was surreal. It was early in the Saban era so the new of being the dominant football program in the country hadn't worn off yet and Bama fans had not yet really entered the "I'm only here to see how much we win by" phase. LSU was still considered a serious hurdle to get past. Tuscaloosa was still recovering from the tornado. There was a buzz around that game that I've never experienced before or since. The only other game that even comes close was the Kick Six, but that one felt different because nobody really thought Auburn might win the game until about halftime.

21-0 nullified that anomaly

The defenses were great, but just being honest, one team had a new QB that hadn't really learned how to play yet and the other really didn't have a QB.
That Alabama defense that year was great, but didn't really face a team with a really good QB all year. Offenses by and large were bad in the conference that year.

I was there and the most intense event I’ve ever witnessed. Game day was unreal and have not had that since.
I think the game changed the way offenses evolved about going forward at least for one coach. You couldn’t rely solely on run game and defense all the time.
