I don't know about USC specifically but college baseball does need the west coast to step back up. Fullerton, Pepperdine, etc haven't done anything in years and they used to be staples in the postseason and Omaha. Fullerton hasn't made a super or Omaha in almost 10 years. Pepperdine hasn't made the NCAAT in over 10 years. UC Irvine hasn't won a regional in over 10 years. Fresno St hasn't won a regional in almost 20 years. Cal hasn't won a regional in 15 years. Stanford looked like they were turning a corner to get back to an elite program (went to Omaha 2021-2023) but have now missed the NCAAT the last 3 years. It's like everyone but UCLA stopped trying.

NIL has pretty much decimated the smaller guys (Fullerton, Pepperdine, Fresno, etc).

Cal never was much of a threat they had some decent runs post WWII and in the 80s/90s

The old P12 teams have pretty much goat fricked their budgets for the non-rev sports by joining the ACC/B1G. I don't think you'll ever see Stanford return to prior state given their travel budget probably consumes what they would have spent on players given they have to travel 2-3 timezones away every other weekend on average. USC has mostly not given a shite about baseball since the late 90s and instead focused on football but who knows they are the wild card. UCLA seems to give a shite because they know they are going to suck at football so might as well invest smaller amounts of funds into a sport they can compete in and potentially win. They won in women's hoops, did well in softball, and had a pretty solid baseball team till they choked on applesauce.

Rally disappointed after a great weekend of baseball to wake up to a clip of Butch Thompson complaining about the regional format. Saying it’s not good for the players and how it’s too taxing on pitchers.

I spoke with Coach Thompson, and he's deeply disappointed that your feelings have been bruised.

We've been trying.

UC Santa Barbara has four regional bids this decade - with three regional finals - and has hosted once. We're on the verge of producing top 5 picks in back to back years (Tyler Bremner was #2 in 2025) with an additional 1st rounder to our credit from 2021. We're doing our part out west.

You’d think one visit to Pepperdine’s campus would be a done deal. Gorgeous

I've gone to a game there. Eddy Field has one of the most gorgeous backdrops in the country. Malibu, where Pepperdine's campus is located, just captures the SoCal beach vibe well.

Good Grief ... and I'm completely serious ... how in the Hell does ANYONE concentrate - or go to work - or focus on anything with that in the background ?
