22.1 million viewers.
Extremely low rating compared to expectations.
Since the BCS National Title Game initiated in 1998, this comes in as the 23rd highest rated out of 27 televised title games.
The only title games with fewer viewers:
21.6 million, 2001 Miami vs Nebraska
21.4 million, 2004 USC vs Oklahoma
18.6 million, 2020 Alabama vs Ohio St
17.2 million, 2022 Georgia vs TCU
Extremely low rating compared to expectations.

Interesting that 3 of the lowest rated championship games have been in the last 5 years

People weren't by then. It was January 2021. Most people in college football watching territory were back out and about.

Somewhat interesting and concerning that some many of the lowest rated games have come since 2020.

One of the mysteries of the pandemic. Everyone was locked in at home, and TV ratings for literally everything plummeted.

Yes. Oddly though, 2023’s Michigan vs Washington got 27.8 million which ranks 7th out of 27.

Yes. National Title Games for the 2021, 2024, 2020, and 2022 seasons come in as the #22, #23, #26, and #27 lowest rated out of all 27 National Title Games since 1998….. literally 4 of the 6 lowest rated.
I blame ESPN. More and more people are cutting cable and ESPN has far too much of a monopoly on the viewership of the sport.

Everyone knew it wasn’t a real season when most of the best players opted out.

Regardless of your politics, Trump's live, open-ended press conference as he signed executive actions was compelling. I had it on my TV and the game on my computer, and I finally turned off the game.

It was Alabama, beating teams with everyone opting out. Nobody cares.

Why do people obsess about viewership ?
So people tuned out when it was 31-7, duh.
Who cares ?

Lower than Michigan vs Washington is very telling. There's no reason a Ohio State vs Notre Dame championship game shouldn't put up huge numbers. College football is trending in the wrong direction.

sports viewership, in general, has dropped considerably since COVID. I don't think that's ESPN's fault. I think casual viewers lost interest when seasons were played at weird times and many never came back. College sports has suffered as well, IMO, due to NIL/portal bullshite. Many people don't care as much as they used to or don't at all anymore. Sports have become too corporate and too focused on the bottom dollar for networks. That turns off a lot of fans. I think honestly they got too big for their own good because it's certainly trending in the wrong direction, and what bad timing with these multi-billion dollar deals that are in effect for decades.

It was 31-7 Ohio State.
People said "here we go again, another Ohio State blowout" & flipped over to Trump stuff.
You really couldn't figure that out ?

They drag it out way too long. Seems like those first round games were forever ago. There was no buildup for the game. Playing it this late, it gets lost with the NFL playoffs.

No one wanted to watch a game without the best team in the country playing (Ole Miss)
