Not EVERY school according SBNation sidewalk FB poll a few years ago. Some just can't get many non-alumni to root for them.
I think it was 2015 data, but likely still pretty close.

There is a big difference but it has nothing to do with athletics:
You might be a real fan of OU football but do you really care about the university? Most graduates would (begrudgingly) sacrifice/downsize athletics in order to save the university while most fans would choose the football program over the university if there was a way (such as licensing the brand and relocating the team to a bigger city, etc). Many graduates would probably prefer to shut down the program in this case.
As a graduate, your memories and emotions are connected to the entire institution and place and not just to the football stadium. The overall institution is more important, athletics is just a big part of it but not everything,.. so its not so much about athletics, but about your alma mater.

100% correct. Non alumni fans generally don't contribute anything to the University other than watching games on TV and don't have the personal connection to the University that alumni fans do.

It was very embarrassing not just for LSU but, for the whole nation, when everyone found out the LSU athletic department, with apparent full support of their demented fan-base, was stealing money from dying children to buy bright and shiny things for their football players.
