It’s called induced hypothermia. Lowers the metabolic and oxygen demand on the body. This preserves tissues and can help someone who is in a post cardiac arrest state recover.

Sad to hear. I’ll accept that information and continue to pray for the guy. Glad his family will be beside him.

Hope it gets better man. Nothing more frustrating than dealing with a sick parent who won’t listen. My children give me less hassle than my mom did when she was sick.

I think this statement is very significant in regard to this story.

As far as the technique goes, it just depends on what resources the facility has available. but the treatment is completely mainstream now. I worked an arrest a week ago today and the local community hospital did it with icepacks around the groin and under the armpits. Unfortunately our patient's family didn't recognize the signs and even though we got ROSC on scene and again when he re-arrested in the truck on the way he'd just been down too long and they pulled the plug Friday.

Here's an American Heart Association statement from back in 2002 on it and here's a Johns Hopkins page that gives a high level description of the process.

You must still be between 40 - 50

That much ribeye would last me a week of meals and old fashioned whipped taters (like your mom made) with real butter and real heavy cream are now off limits. I can do meats, just low fat content but can eat all the asparagus and salad I want (yay?)

Also possibly suffered seizures.

Sometimes a patient in cardiac arrest will display brief seizure like activity and sometimes they'll suffer seizures post-arrest after ROSC.

Post arrest seizures are a very bad sign and usually mean there's very serious brain damage.

Mississippi State coach had a massive heart attack on Sunday, and Leach, 61, collapsed at his home in Starkville, but did not receive medical attention for between 10 to 15 minutes.

Damn, that's horrible

Quick action is usually the only real chance someone has with an episode such as this & even then, no guarantees.

Then you're faced with "what if he does survive" and yet be disabled. Not many would want this.

Sounds like it’s a formality at this point and just waiting for his last 2 kids to get there.

This is devastating

For the Jackson paper to specifically report what they reported, in my professional opinion that came from a source at the hospital, HIPAA or not.

Don't read much into the number in the story. It doesn't say when he was last known well.

It's possible someone saw him arrest and immediately called 911 but from a few months short of 25 years of experience I can tell you the odds very high that's just the time from when someone picked up the phone to call 911 and the first units got on scene and initiated treatment. Most of the time with an in-home arrest the patient's feeling bad so they lay down somewhere or sit in the recliner and it's a while before someone recognizes something's seriously wrong with them.

ETA: Or go to the bathroom and sit on the toilet. You'd be shocked at the number of cardiac arrest patients I've drug out of the bathroom.

This. Makes it seem very grave, or confirmation that he has likely experienced brain death.
