I am not particularly an LSU fan I have only been to Tiger Stadium once but I LOVE when there band plays "hold that tiger." Is this just strictly an LSU thing or do other schools who have tiger mascots play this tune? Where did the tune come from? Did LSU come up with it? It seems to pump the crowd up when the band plays it. I know it must have started a while back because I remember hearing it on the opening scene of the motion picture about the life of Billy Cannon "Everbodys All-American" and it was set in the 50's. Just curious, thanks for any responses.

Clemson, Memphis, and Missou also play a version of it. It was written and composed in the early 1900's by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band

It comes from the Tiger Rag which was recorded in New Orleans in like 1917 or so. Very popular in the 1920's and 30's. Other lesser schools such as Clemson, Missouri, and Auburn also use a lesser, weaker version of the song to hail their respective(not respected) universities in their hollow and futile effort to claim the mantle of the Tiger. The most recognized and universally respected version is performed by The Golden Band From Tigerland.

If what I've heard is correct, the Band doesn't play "Hold That Tiger" anymore because of the "assholes" chant during it.

TIger Rag is what they quit playing due to the a-hole chant. Hold That Tiger is played coming down Victory Hill, in pregame, and at the start of the 4th quarter.

Many college and High School bands play different versions of Tiger Rag, but the stirring rendition you hear the Golden Band play is strictly L...S...mothafrickin U.

Incorrect..."Hold that Tiger" is what we LSU fans know as the "pregame song".

They stopped playing "Tiger Rag" because of the assholes chant.

There is no such song named "Hold that Tiger." Hold That Tiger are lyrics contained within "Tiger Rag" and are those famous first four notes of "Pre-Game and Touchdown." HOLD-THAT-TI-GER or DA DA DAAA DA to most LSU Fans/Alumni........

It sucks that we don't play the regular version of Tiger Rag also since the admin banned it becasue people said a-hole. The da da da daaa is our audio signature.

You saying that reminds me of a very funny thing an Ole Miss buddy of mine told me….we were at an Ole Miss/Auburn game in Oxford some years back, and while the Ole Miss band was on the field playing “Dixie” the Ole Miss football team ran out …he looks at me and says “That is the most spectacular moment in all of college football, when the Rebels take the field to Dixie”….I couldn’t help but laugh in his face…

That movie had nothing to do with Billy Cannon. It came down between a few schools to set the scene. Luckily LSU was picked.
