It’s hard to campaign for a three loss team deserving a playoff spot

If what was said Tuesday as to why Alabama was put ahead of Miami, Alabama should be ahead of SMU. But SMU won’t be dropped five spots for losing on the last second in a conference title game.

SMU is in. Hopefully shortly thereafter Milroe declares for the draft and Alabama can start focusing on the future.

Three loss teams would've gotten in some years if we had this format the previous ten.

What didn't happen was a three loss team getting in over a two loss team from a power conference, or at least the CFP rarely ranked them ahead of a two loss team unless the third loss came in a championship game.

But the difference now is that there are no elite recruiting/talent teams in the Big 12 and the two left in the ACC are playing like crap. So teams don't really need to elevate themselves to win those leagues.

When a last second loss is your best win. I don't see that as something to highlight on a resume.

Instead of focusing on Alabama, let’s look at SMU’s schedule and prove why they deserve to be in?

They made it to their conference championship and didn’t get blown out. If they’re in, that’ll be the reasoning. That’s the frustrating part - zero consistency with the human element.

If Miami is out for being winless against top 25 teams, SMU should be out for being winless against top 25 teams.

If it's between SMU and Bama, Bama is in. Why? TV ratings.

This means nothing.

Look at HOW they made it there and their schedule? They lost to the only ranked team in their schedule and beat a bunch of trash.

Bama has some bad losses too, don’t get me wrong. But they have a damn hard schedule and have some very good wins also.

ETA: look at the schedules and ask who would most likely to win a game? Nothing on SMU’s schedule says they would likely win.

I’m not disagreeing with you. I just think the committee finds it easier not to punish a team for losing close yesterday as opposed to putting in an Alabama team that lost to two 6-6 teams.

Alabama is more deserving but the path of least resistance is leaving SMU in.

Because Bama would be SMU by 30. I hate Bama, but that is the truth.

That’s debatable

If you want to push it down further

Against teams with a .500 or better record, looks like 7-2 for SMU, no ranked wins

Bama is 6-3, 3 ranked wins.

So is it one less loss with an easy schedule and no good wins, or a harder schedule with good wins.

Flip a coin, let fate decide if you don’t want schedules to matter.

Because the ADs agreed on the conference champions all having automatic bids - and the committee decided not to penalize those teams (effectively dropping them out of the playoff) for losing their championship games. The committee has boxed themselves into a corner. I honestly don't see how it is possible to keep Bama in - no matter how much of a case can be made for strength of schedule

The committee should be pushing teams to play harder schedules not softer ones. Putting SMU in says SOS doesn’t matter, only the number in the loss column.

Yes - instead of leveling the playing field by giving those outside the top 4 a chance to play for it all, they have chosen to punish teams with tougher schedules. What product do they want on the field? How many 50 point drubbings of TCU must they see before they realize they are harming the sport?

Then so should Texas, who also has zero wins against top 25 teams.

I don't think so. Not in year 1. I believe Bama would be in if this were the 5th or 6th year of the 12 team playoff, but not in year 1. If they let Bama in over a conference championship runner up that was previously 8th...that would set a very very bad precedent

And I am 100% confident Bama would beat SMU on a neutral site, but the committee spoke last week when they placed SMU 8th after the regular season

bammer will get in … purely for economic reasons. The network will see to it.

“Deserve” has got nothing to do with it

It’s all about the benjamins….

Please let an NFL team be dumb enough to draft him.
