Yep. How long will it be before MLB teams take over the NIL for certain programs & just use them as farm clubs?

It would be interesting but I don't see how they can control where those players go. The Yankees could've supported LSU in 2023 but then watch Skenes still go to the Pirates and Crews to the Nats.

College baseball wouldn't fully blow up until they move the start of the season back a month. That's when you get the interest of the midwest and northeast TV markets.

They might push that if the talent level is going to surge.

I love Southern college baseball, but from an objective point of view- the Big 10 is the wealthiest conference, and they're smack in the middle of baseball territory (the MLB footprint). It makes sense to get them cranked up, but you can't play in most of those markets for a good month, if not more.

Purely from a business angle, it makes no sense that the Sun Belt is stronger than the Big 10.

Quite the opposite. More top end talent to go around. I’d expect as much or more parity.

This will be truth. Plus the draft is only going to be 12 rounds. So even though a player will be draft eligible after two seasons, many of them will play 3-4 seasons in college. Obviously some of them may end up as undrafted free agents but with college NIL they would be foolish to give that up if they weren’t a sure fire draft pick.

Man the MLB really is financially in trouble to be cutting back that bad. Sounds like the minor league system is too big for them.

In this day and age... I don't see the upside for minor leagues in terms of funding them for MLB.

There are too many other entertainment options to really make money for the actual minor league teams.

OKC has always had a Triple A team. When I was younger... people went to watch them because there wasn't that much else to do.

We still have one... but in OKC there is now enough to do that sitting through a minor league game isn't near as appealing as it once was.

I don't even pay attention to our minor league team... much less go to their games. The only time I even hear about them is if I'm watching local sports on TV. You don't even hear about them on local sports radio unless something unusual happens.

Gonna be more Troy like teams making the CWS. Way more talent is going to be in college than signing out of high school.
Makes good economic sense for MLB. They are letting the colleges develop talent rather than running a money losing minor system. Minor league may suffer the most.
All of this from a 30,000 ft view as I just did a cursory read of the proposal.

Why? So they can develop players for other teams to draft them?

Yep. Move it back a month. And when school is out, do away with the shitty midweek games. Insert more conference games. Develop more pitchers (there’s going to be more pitchers available). Right now a team can get through most of the season with two quality weekend starters.

But in the post season and especially the CWS you really need four good starters and 3-4 good arms out of the pen.

So when school is out and travel is easier, how about two midweek conference games + your regular fri/sat/sun games.

Product would be better, atmosphere would be better. TV would be better.

And do it all with wood bats.

With the portal and draft eligibility after sophomore year, the roster turnover will be absolutely insane every year. I wouldn't mind this if they kept it as you're eligible if you turn 21 before a certain date.

Yes but think about how many elite SEC signees never make it to campus because they end up shooting up draft boards and getting drafted first round. All of a sudden the Konnor Griffins of the world are playing 2 years of SEC ball before going pro. You probably have anywhere from 1 to 3 elite level prospects per year per team in the top half of the SEC who never get to see these elite players they sign because the pros steal them.

I think it will more than make up for the talent losses after 2 years.

There may be more MLB teams in the Big 10 area, but the players all come from the southeast. I would be willing to bet the elite talent is disproportionately coming from the southeast, mainly TX FL and surrounding states. Makes sense that the colleges in these areas would be cleaning up with the talent historically. Also the southeast doesn’t have the pro baseball fandom to pull fan interest away. I am locked in on college baseball and I cannot tell you a thing about MLB. I cannot tell you the last time I watched a game.

Players come from all over.

They come to the Southeast, because the weather and fan interest (and now, money) is there.

You're fooling yourself if you think moving the calendar to allow Big 10 teams a better home schedule, plus them investing similar to the SEC, wouldn't result in them becoming significant players in the sport.

Auburn is one of two SEC teams that has never even played in a baseball natty. They are bottom feeders. I dont know how that is a troll?

Exactly. Go slum it in the minors or get paid to live like a king in college.

A buddy of mine who coaches my son's baseball team is a former closer in the NL and head baseball coach at one of the better programs in TN. I said something along these lines this weekend about one of his players who is projected as a late 1st round early 2nd round pick and would he go pro or go to Mississippi State. He says NIL has changed the decision making for kids like this. I thought it would make them more likely to go to an SEC school, live like a king, and get paid. His opinion is you go to the minors if your ultimate goal is to get to the MLB and have an actual chance to make it. His reasoning is that with the portal college coaches have zero incentive to develop kids anymore. If they don't perform the way they want, you replace them in the portal. MLB clubs on the other hand have every incentive to develop kids and promote them through the minors as quickly as possible.
