Would it be their fakest national championship ever?

My vote would be on 1941, but you decide:

1941 - Alabama (9-2) had lost to Mississippi State (SEC champs) and Vanderbilt. The Tide finished ranked 20th in the Associate Press Poll, behind four SEC teams. Still claims title.

1934 - Alabama was Co-Champion of the SEC, but finished third in the inaugural AP Poll. Minnesota beat the Tide 50 to 5.5 first-place votes. All of the consensus selectors picked Minnesota.

1930 - Notre Dame (10-0) was chosen as champion by Helms, NFF, Dickinson, and almost all others. Alabama (9-0) was third, but beat No. 2 Washington in the Rose Bowl. Who picked Alabama? Parke Davis, Sagarin, and Football Research.

1964 - Alabama won both the AP and Coaches Polls, only because both were taken prior to the bowls. Bama lost to Texas in the Orange Bowl when Namath was stopped on a quarterback sneak at the 1-yard line in the last minute.

1973 - Bear Bryant's Tide, ranked No. 1, met Ara Parseghian's No. 3 Fighting Irish in a legendary Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame topped Alabama with a last-minute field goal, 24-23.

1978 - Alabama (11-1) lost to USC in the regular season. USC lost to a conference foe during the season. Alabama won the most consensus picks, but USC won the Coaches Poll. Some say USC is champion due to the head-to-head matchup. To me, this is a true split in the national championship.

Let’s talk about running and hiding and quitters.

Your little outpost in Texas appears to be an expert at it. So you should know more about it than about want Bama is doing.

The melt has taken a turn. You all are usually riding Bama's coattails.

It would be horrible, but still not as bad as chickening out of a game and using covid as a cover.

I think there’s already a couple threads about that

At least you changed your allegiance to the SEC* team that was willing to play in the Gator Bowl

*Had to step in for your sorry asses. We should give them your share of the payout.

But just like Saban's Rings, there's always room for one more.

Every Alabama NC winning team played in a Bowl game, many of the early NC winning teams did not. In fact up until the 1976 season teams were being awarded NC before the bowl games.

One that Alabama should not claim

1934 - Alabama was Co-Champion of the SEC, but finished third in the inaugural AP Poll. Minnesota beat the Tide 50 to 5.5 first-place votes. All of the consensus selectors picked Minnesota.

Alabama was unbeaten and untied, went to the Rose Bowl and beat Stanford

quote:

1930 - Notre Dame (10-0) was chosen as champion by Helms, NFF, Dickinson, and almost all others. Alabama (9-0) was third, but beat No. 2 Washington in the Rose Bowl. Who picked Alabama? Parke Davis, Sagarin, and Football Research

Yep, won both polls.

UPI awarded before Bowl

USC lost later in the year, and had a false TD against Michigan in the Rose Bowl (UM recovered the fumble at the goal line.) Meanwhile Alabama beat #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl

Didn't 8&4 start claiming a few extra national championships after joining the SEC? Doesn't Jimbo have a fake national championship trophy without a date on it?

It's wasted effort.

They have only 1 NC, and it's claim is as tenuous as any of those, save for 1941.

Let's stay on the theme of the day, please.

I agree, Alabama should get rid of that claim.

Of course, it's still better than some of A&M's claims.

And Alabama also has the most bowl game appearances in college football...because they don't puss out of them.

There is nothing you can say that will wash away the shame of A&M quitting.

You mean if Alabama won the title by not opting out like a bitch?

I'm not sure how that would be Alabama's fault.

OP is basically saying he'd be pissed that Alabama didn't quit but everyone else did.

I've always hated the 1941 claim, especially when there are a lot more worthy candidates.

Let's just claim 1966 so Notre "Play For The Tie" Dame can suck a donkey's arse.

Poll era titles Bama 13 . Second most Notre Dame 8. No matter how you count them Bama has more than you.
