How did SMU wind up in ACC and not the Big 12? Serious question.

Paid zero attention to the politics, etc beyond the SEC expansion, which has been a turd as expected.
But back to SMU. Was the ACC just desperate? The additions of Cal and Stanford make even less sense, but focus on SMU.

Makes absolutely zero sense, especially since SMU and TCU are both in Dallas and Fort Worth and Baylor (Waco) is just an hour and half drive south.

You're just dumb.
What makes zero sense is having teams in a conference that overlap the same viewing area.

How many people watch SMU football though? On a historical basis.

The Atlantic Coast Conference should not be in Texas.

For a geographical location it makes better sense but they probably get more money from the ACC

Texas Big 12 schools don't want SMU money in the Big 12.

For all this to happen, it took power players who knew how to wheel and deal, lots of money and some Dallas bravado -- all of which are in abundance on the Hilltop. Most schools make a conference move to get more television revenue, not less. But SMU just wanted a seat at the table. SMU's chairman of the board, David Miller, fired his metaphorical six-shooter in the air when he explained how the program could go without television revenue for nine years: The money didn't matter to them.
"It's a couple hundred million dollars," Miller told Yahoo. "I'm not losing sleep over it."

The Texas schools all think they are the best Texas school and look down on the others. Go look at their message boards. Weird shite. TAMU took it to extremes.

That is the best business decision SMU has made so far.

They bought their way in and gave up TV revenue for the next 10 or so years.

This is dumb. There is little value anymore in viewing area. With the introduction of streaming, it’s all about audience draw, along with total fanbase. Rutgers, for example, is in the largest TV market. Their ratings suck.
