The entire 38 day saga is pretty well documented here for those really interested in it.

Frankly, the wins even our mediocre coaches have is rather amazing. Shula, Curry, Franchione, Dubose all won at least 10 games in a particular season.
LSU has been like that as well for the most part.
Archer and Dinardo both won 10 games (Archer also won the SEC) and even Stovall went to an Orange Bowl after having to fill in when Bo Rein died.
Arnsparger was a legit coach so can't really call him mediocre.
It's a testament to how shitty Curley Hallman was that he managed to not even have 1 good year.
Then in modern times we've had cartoon characters win NCs

Alabama hired Nick Saban because of Candy Edwards. Without her, Nick Saban never ends up in Alabama.
You have to give Finebaum a little credit. Without his making fun of Rich Rodriguez’s wife’s hair on the radio Rich Rod would have followed through with his acceptance of the job.

Plenty of money plus Saban wasn’t a good fit for the NFL and I think wanted out of Miami
I’d like to know what Alabama fans thought of him after his first season where he went 6-6 that includes losing to Louisiana Monroe and MSU

They showed improvement so they were optimistic, they smacked Tennessee and played us pretty tough. The melt after the ULM loss was impressive though.

ULM was embarrassing, but that was much more to do with the culture of the team at the time that needed to change to play Saban's style of football and adherence to his rules and "process."
In spite of team and organizational lack of full buy in to that point, Bama was competitive in every loss and beat UT in the TSIO.
Recruiting seemed promising. I felt things would be much better after razing the program to restart his way and reset 10+ years of damn near chaos without real player/coach accountability.
I was more surprised at the 2008 season and how soon things turned around than I was the debacle of the 2007 season.

Remember when everyone thought Alabama was crazy for paying Saban $3.5 million a year? Fun times.
You can bet LSU, Michigan and Auburn would like to go back to those times.

We knew it was gonna take a bit of time to get back. You could already tell in spots that the team was changing into something different than the last decade.

People thought we were crazy for giving Saban 1.8 in 99

He fell in their laps after a shitty NFL HC stint.

I love how the script A's cannot accept your posts and others. For those of us in the know, we realize timing was everything and that is how Coach Saban ended up in Alabama. Hell, not a month after he left for Miami he had Sexton contact about a return but by then Coach Miles was in the fold. It was all about timing. Sometimes it works for you and other times it works against you

I think most who aren’t delusional realize this. These coaches don’t come to our schools because they think Mike or Big Al are just that charming. It’s a job to them like our jobs are to us.
Sure they build relationships and have good experiences or bad that influence them, but at the end of the day it’s about timing and who has the resources and commitment to support their goals.
Alabama has the resources and commitment and was at the right place at the right time. Not sure why that would be controversial

Nick Saban did call about getting his job back that part is true. But no they weren't going to fire Les for it.
