Thanks for the post, never realized there was a game on the Quad (or at Monroe Park in Mobile). Good stuff

Really would love to know where that Memphis stadium was located.

The more known stadium that predated the Liberty Bowl was Crump Stadium. It was massively downsized and then ultimately demolished in the mid 2000s and a new high school stadium built in its place

Original Stadium

What's there now

Before Crump was built in the 1930s, Memphis played their home football games at fairgrounds and local high schools

According to Wiki, Melton Field was where the current student union now sits. If that's true, then the building in the background is Woodrow College, which still stands on The Horseshoe to this day.

Veterans Memorial in Jackson used to host SEC doubleheaders. You'd have something like State-Bama during the day and Ole Miss-LSU at night, both in the same stadium. The Egg Bowl was also played there every year from '73-'90.

I also know that State played Florida in Tampa in '89 and in Orlando '91. Both of those were supposed to be home games in Starkville, mind you, but former State AD Larry Templeton had a habit of selling home games to make a buck.

FWIW, the '58 LSU game at Ladd-Peebles in Mobile was Coach Bryant's first game as HC at his alma mater. Cannon scored late to put it away, BC was clutch.

It was before my time, but Athens was probably decently difficult to get to from the west until 1990s as well, when 316 was built. Before then, I guess people rode on 78 though Snellville and Monroe or Atlanta Highway through Lawrenceville and Winder. Either way, that seems alot slower than what they have now.

South Carolina's library has a really, really, really good historical film archive. Somewhere in there I found an old aerial tour of Columbia, and I believe Melton Field was still there. I'll have to find and post the link.

Randomly found video of marching band playing a set called "Songs of the Confederacy" in South Carolina's stadium in 1961...sign of the times lol

Tulane Stadium

Wow, appears to be in the middle of a neighborhood. Gameday traffic & parking must have been tough. Where was it located?

Right smack dab in the middle of Uptown New Orleans near Tulane University.

I looked on Amazon to buy this and it's $95. Must be out of print, which is a shame

Alabama and Georgia played nearly every year from 1901 to 1935 and did not play in Athens until 1935. Outside of Ponce de Leon Park in Atlanta from 1919-21, every game in the series was played in Alabama which shows how deep the REC roots truly go.

Very cool.
State Field has always been such an interesting place to me. Just to the southeast of the old Pentagon Barracks at the Downtown campus, nestled right up on the bank of the Mississippi.

After that one, wins against Coach Bryant became very few and far between for us.
