Especially since we were average (at best) in football before 1990 and never even made the NCAAT until 1987.

Yeah, football had been getting decent and maybe should have been expected to get good with population explosion.
But basketball? Pretty much came out of nowhere. Fairly famous story of Pitino telling an unknown Donovan to even refuse the job. Wild to think where program is now.

It was Alabama legend Paul "Bear" Bryant who had once said Florida was a "sleeping giant" just waiting for the right coach to come along. Bryant died in 1983, well before that certain coach arrived, but the Crimson Tide folks he left behind were starting to understand.
