I wonder how many B- coaches in their early 40’s have made it to NCG . Can anyone help me out here

Not sure about the rant’s grading schemes, but I’ll give it a shot. Each of these, let’s call it not A-list, coaches not just played for but won titles before age 45 (Kirby’s current age):

Danny Ford, Paul Dietzel, Johnny Majors, Dennis Erickson

These played for but lost:

Jackie Sherrill, Gus Malzahn

Multiple A-list coaches won titles at ages 45 or younger, including:

Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer, John McKay, Darrell Royal, Bob Stoops, Woody Hayes, Urban Meyer, Jimmy Johnson

Finally, these coaching giants won titles before they were 50:

Larry Coker, Gene Chizik, Vince Dooley, Phillip Fulmer

I think the takeaway here is that, so far, Kirby is closer to Gus Makzahn or Jackie Sherrill than he is to Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops. But, if he can get his act together, he may reach Phillip Fulmer or Larry Coker status.

I think the takeaway is that a majority of the coaches you listed here were operating in a time of college football that doesn’t remotely resemble the current time period (let alone having to compete with a program that is operating like Alabama and Saban are). The only coaches for comparison at this point are Dabo, Lincoln Riley and Ryan Day who are in virtually identical situations as coordinators/assistants who became first time HCs at big programs. Kelly, Meyer, and even Saban we’re all HCs with success at multiple stops prior to their current/final college stops. You can make an argument for Gus and Jimbo given that they are still active and their last title shots were 8 years ago.

LMAO!

If this isn't cherry picking at its finest I don't know what is.

Let's take a look at a few that didn't win a title until after 50

Nick Saban
Bobby Bowden
Tom Osborne

And just for shits and giggles: Coach O

If anything your post demonstrates how being in the right place at the right time along with luck can all be part of a team and coach winning a NC and arguably the 3 best coaches in the last 30 years couldn't pull it off before 50.
