Skylar Mays, a junior guard for the LSU basketball team, was named Monday a first-team Division I Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

quote:

Mays is averaging in double figures on the court while maintaining a 4.01 GPA in pre-med/kinesiology.

Also Monday, Mays was named as LSU's representative on the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team.

On the court, Mays has averaged 13.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals a game in starting all 31 games.

Story from The Advocate

I posted this on the Rant, but hopefully some will appreciate it here as well. This an amazing achievement by this young man to be an academic All-American and LSU's representative on the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team.

Appreciate the responses. I'm not really big on creating threads, but we need more kids like this in the conference and in the world quite frankly. I would love to hear about some the kids doing similar things at other schools in the SEC.

While not to the level of what Mays achieved:

Admiral Schofield graduated in 3 years, and will complete his Masters in May.

Grant Williams will graduate in 3 years this May. Should he choose to return for his 4th season, it will be as a graduate student.

Here is the other thing I like...Skyler Mays and Grant Williams each represented their teams on the SEC Men's Basketball Community Service Team.

This is impressive no matter who it's compared to. Also, just the fact that Schofield and Williams have both decided to stay in school to get their degrees is impressive to me. In this era of players wanting to get to next level as quickly as possible, it's refreshing to see these guys graduate. Plus, I love watching both of them play as well.

That's why I put that in bold. This is what I like the most too. How they find the time to do this with all of the other things going on in their lives is amazing to me.

Imagine if the Rant could reach the point where you could start a thread about a kid like Schoefield or Mays without a dozen angry trolls rushing in. I will never understand how the rivalry and assholery between schools ( which I enjoy) reaches the point that it extends to the kids who make these rivalries possible.

I made this same post about Skylar over on the rant and it went over well. Of course some jackass had to down vote it, but who really cares. Now, if Schofield or Williams had been brought up in the thread people would have been assholes about it.
