Decided it's getting about that time to start watching film for this upcoming class.

Started with DB's since that is Bamas biggest need.

I've been thinking that Campbell is Bamas no.1 target because that is who Bama had the best chance at signing, but after watching PS and TC film - damn if TC isn't the one that jumps off the reel at ya. Would love to have both, but if forced to pick one after watching both I'd honestly take TC, and I wouldn't have to think about it.

I can't be certain on limited footage, but after watching PS and TC reel they move TC around more. He appears to be the Minkah of that backfield.

(holy shite both of these guys playing in the same backfield in HS )

Much like McKinney from last year TC reads plays faster than most everyone on the field, and takes absolutely perfect angles to the football.

Watch TC film. He brings the pain, and his team really feeds off his energy. Watch the sidelines when he makes plays. Watch how they feed off his playmaking and physical presence in that backfield. I'd honestly say after watching both PS and TC that TC is the Alpha Alpha back there. JMHO

Hard to say, but I'd also say TC has a step on PS when they both get to their top gear. No idea what they've tested like at camps, but even if PS has timed faster at a camp (only reason I can imagine he's ranked higher) TC appears to be faster in pads.

PS reel has a moment at 1:14 where while not simultaneously running at top speed both PS and TC do hit top gear in the same play, and to my eye TC looked to be closing ground.

1:14 PS with ball on turnover - TC (no.8) turns and runs the play down hits top speed for a moment at 1:19, and for that moment looked to have another gear over PS.

Here is TC film. Film speaks for itself. Great DB prospect. Do Want.

Alabama reportedly put an offer on the table for former Auburn defensive lineman Antwuan Jackson Jr. on Wednesday.

Per Hank South

Joiner's fear of depth charts is why some sour on him. He doesn't run like most backs his size, but...he doesn't run like most backs his size either(faster).

He reminds me a lot of Jalen Hurd, who I thought would be a better WR/HB than RB. Fast forward to now, he's now a WR at Baylor. Get them in space and watch out.

I want him to put a metric arse ton of carries on film, show he can stay healthy as a bellcow back. I wish he wouldn't bounce outside so much, but I complained about Derrick Henry doing that in HS and it turned out ok.

He must be down the board, if all he is saying is true.

Guess the coaches like where they are at with the other DL recruits.

I wouldn't go that far. Communication from the staff this cycle has seemingly been an issue with multiple targets (Terrace Marshall being one of them).

It appears they've got it figured out now though.

I know it's very average year for in-state talent, but there's no way Jenkins is top 10.

It doesn't seem like Pruitt is very active. At FSU and UGA, he was all over the place recruiting.

Wow, communication problems with recruits.

Is the Alabama recruiting machine starting to show problems?

Alabama makes the cut for 5-star CB Patrick Surtain Jr.

As documented on Wednesday, cornerback is a big need for Alabama in the 2018 class after not signing any in the 2017 class. And, again, Kyriq McDonald is listed as a corner on the scouting sites, but he’s not expected to play any of the boundary corner spots in Alabama’s secondary.

The Crimson Tide would like to sign at least three corners in this recruiting cycle, and Patrick Surtain Jr. is one of those players at the top of Alabama’s wish list.

Surtain, a 5-star prospect from American Heritage High School (Plantation, Fla.), released his top 6 on Wednesday night, and Alabama made the cut. Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU and Ohio State were the other schools to make his short list.

The U.S. Army All-American told SEC Country why Alabama is one of his top schools:

“Alabama has been on a hot streak for a while and I really loved the university when I visited,” Surtain said. “It was great. I loved the vibe and getting a chance to talk to coach [Nick] Saban and what he sees in my future at Alabama and getting along with [defensive backs] coach [Derrick] Ansley as well.”

Surtain visited Tuscaloosa back in July for the Champions Cookout and had a chance to meet with the Alabama staff in June at Florida International’s satellite camp. Since those two trips, Surtain said he’s in almost daily contact with Saban and Ansley.

“We talk throughout the week and their message is clear of how bad of a need it is to get me,” Surtain said.

The staff isn’t lying. Surtain is needed in this class. Here’s what the depth chart could look like in 2018:

LCB/RCB: Trevon Diggs, junior (in 2018) and Nigel Knott, redshirt sophomore
Star: Shyheim Carter, junior; Kyriq McDonald, likely a redshirt freshman

That’s it. Guys can emerge later on, obviously, but that’s what Alabama may be working with heading into next season at corner and star (nickel back). Pretty empty cupboard.

But, the good news for Alabama on the recruiting trail is that teams can’t negatively recruit against the Tide when it comes to depth. A lot of teams use Alabama’s loaded depth chart against it on the recruiting trail, but cornerback isn’t a position where there are 5-star prospects lining the streets waiting their turn to play. Surtain sees that.

“That affects a lot of my consideration with Alabama knowing their need for corners,” Surtain said. “It’s what Coach Saban and I talked about. It’s a great opportunity for me.”

While Surtain is saying positive things about Alabama, LSU and Florida State are still seen as the two favorites to land his commitment. It is interesting to note, though, that Surtain is expected to be in Atlanta this weekend for the Alabama-FSU game, and he’s expected to sit in the section of the Crimson Tide’s recruiting targets and not the Seminoles’.

The Tigers have been the leader for Surtain for several months now, but he didn’t return a comment when asked if that was still the case. LSU recruiting reporter Sam Spiegelman documented at length why the Tigers are going to be tough to beat when it comes to landing Surtain.

I still think LSU is where Surtain is going to wind up, but I think Alabama is in good position to land his teammate, 5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell, who I made the case for the team’s No. 1 overall target in the 2018 class. The Tide have a cornerback commitment from Jalyn Armour-Davis, and I expect them to land former LSU commit Nadab Joseph and junior college prospect and former LSU CB Saivion Smith when they make their decisions.

So a DB class of JA-D, Campbell, Joseph and Smith. I can dig it.

I think it had more to do with staff turnover than anything else. I'm sure we were stretched pretty thin after losing Napier, Cristobal and Kiffin.

Everyone who claimed a lack of communication has come out recently to say everything is good now.

Is Ani Izuchukwu out for the year? (@HunterOverst)

I asked around about Ani Izuchukwu, learning he broke his ankle in the preseason and will be out the next six weeks. He should return after that for Davidson Academy in Nashville, Tenn. His coach, Jonathan Quinn, said Izuchukwu should return for the team’s bye during Week 5 of the season.

Izuchukwu has some interesting traits that make him an interesting prospect. The Class of 2019 defensive end ranks as a 4-star prospect and the No. 13 defensive end in the class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound defensive end has the size to develop into a good pass rusher down the road, but he’s a raw prospect and missing these games during his junior season won’t help matters.

I’ve been told Tennessee doesn’t have much interest at this time.

Scout has Tank Jenkins ranked #244 overall.

He's a 4-star on Rivals, but isn't in their Top 250.

ESPN has him #248 overall.

247 has him at #390.

@elcarg: Where does Auburn look for two class needs — corner and defensive tackle?

Going into this recruiting cycle, the only desperate need for Auburn (in my opinion) was at safety. The Tigers figured that situation out before the season got under way with Quindarious Monday, Jamien Sherwood, Kolbi Fuqua and Josh Marsh, leaving room for a potential change in heart from one of those prospects.

Now, the two position groups you’ve named are the right spots to turn, if you’re the type of person looking to unnecessarily panic about a position group. That distinction probably would’ve gone to running back if Auburn missed on Martin last week.

At corner: See the question below for your answer on Auburn’s No. 1 option at the position. He isn’t the only name available. Derek Turner would probably commit tomorrow if Auburn was willing to accept his commitment. JaKorey Hawkins is a guy I’ve written about in the past who could end up on Auburn’s radar by signing day. Christian Tutt is a cornerback who has had one of the most bizarre recruitments that has visited Auburn on occasion.

At defensive tackle: Coynis Miller is the guy for Auburn in this class. On top of that, commit Daquan Newkirk will most likely play inside. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner said he’d like to add at least one more guy to the class, assuming Miller chooses Auburn, and the most likely option there might be Mobile (Ala.) prospect Andres Fox if he were to bulk up and move inside.
