One of the Bama writers tweeted he thinks Hurts has a "legit" shot to win the job.

The NFL sometimes has the unwritten rule of "if the rookie makes it close, then play the rookie". Does anyone think Saban would follow that mantra if indeed Hurts keeps it close with the other 3 QB's in this race?

Ive been pretty excited about Hurts since he enrolled and Im loving the early reviews on him from practice, but I just can see Saban giving him the job this early.

Maybe he shocks us all...who knows

I think that anyone who watched the spring game realizes that Hurts has a legit shot.

His biggest hurdle will be knowing the offense. He obviously has the physical tools, but there's so much more to being a good QB in the SEC, and it's rare a true freshman has those intangibles. Does he know the playbook? Can he get someone lined up right if he's not in the right place pre-snap? Does he command respect from his teammates?

I still doubt he'll start, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get significant playing time. Also wouldn't surprise to not see him at all and him get redshirted.

Took 3 plays to realize he has something the others don't have. The game seems so much slower to him than the other guys. Plus the way he threw balls into tight coverage was amazing. Dude just casually put the ball where he knew only the receiver could catch it. He's a real duel threat as well.

As good as BB is, it still looks like some of his good throws are kinda, hold it hold it hold it throw a laser over the middle in hopes that it's a good throw and not too late. I think that's why he sails em high over the middle and gets picked(or used to get picked).

I'm team Hurts. But obviously we don't see much of the competition at all. Plus, players improve. Plus I could be just be wrong.

I can't wait to find out who the guy is, and have faith in whoever the coaches go with.

I think Kiffin's system is easier for these guys to run than other systems, isn't it?

All this talk, and he's still running third, just ahead of the guy with an injury. (But there's no depth chart, yadda yadda).

I think he's going to be great eventually. But he's a freshman. It's going to be either Bateman or Barnett, barring some complete disaster by both those guys. My money is on Barnett.

It's easier than McElwain's and most of the pre-snap reads come from the sideline. He'd have to make some though, and I doubt he'll be given full reigns on calling audibles. I don't even think Blake nor Jake had that freedom. Jake maybe did late in the season.

It'll be interesting to watch. I still think Bateman starts the USC game, with Barnett getting some snaps in hopes one of them solidifies himself as the guy. I haven't watched any practices though other than A-Day, and haven't even read much on it. Just basing that on every other season Saban has been coach.

We are in the infantile days of fall practice, and so far he is performing at least just as good as the other two.

Its gonna be barnett. Hes got all the tools, has the wheels, has been through 2 springs, a season as scout team qb, and will have done 2 fall camps by the start of this season. Plus he has the alpha dog swagger which bateman lacks. Hurts doesnt bring more to the table, unless he just blows past everyone in camp it wont be him this year

He's probably a better runner than Barnett, but there's also really no way for most of us to know. Judging by the A-Day performances is a fool's errand.

I do remember threads like this one across Bama boards a couple of years ago about Barnett.

His uptake has been much faster than any fresh we have had in a long time or ever. Coaches son, he lives and breathes it. One of his bigger upsides minus the physical stuff.

Much faster than Blake, he runs a legit 4.5 while Blake is more like High 4.7, 4.8 range. Cooper Bateman is also a 4.8ish guy. Will be fun to watch all this go down.

How was Jalen Hurts not rated higher out of HS? If you're a Freshman and can start at Alabama under Nick Saban, you deserve to have been a 5* #1 rated QB

Bateman runs around a 4.55.

Every time i see this kid play it looks like everything is in slow-mo for him. Gotta think this kid has the potential to be a big star.

Hurts can be a star, but it won't be this year. Quick, name the last QB to win an SEC or national title as a TRUE freshman. Bet you can't, and there's a reason.

My prediction is Bateman starts against USC and we have a conservative game plan to pull out a win against a quality team. BB8 gets some snaps, and then plays even more in week 2. By week 3 we will have our starter, and there's a good chance it could be BB8 if he protects the ball and plays smart because his arm talent is far superior to Bateman's.

I also don't recall seeing many if any true freshman that look like Hurts.

So, how much have you seen of Hurts? A-day and some practice throws on video?
