Here's my take: the other 10 guys on the first team offense aren't in a vacuum and aren't idiots. They see who's moving the ball and having success against our first team defense. The best defense they will face all year. Saban has said whoever wins over the team and doesn't make mistakes starts. Now if I'm an OL (former center/guard) I'd be pissed as hell if he trotted Bateman out there to start against USC if he had performed the worst of the three. I'd also feel zero confidence if we fell behind and needed to move the ball and Bateman is still in there. Of course you can't say anything if you are a team player but you can't change how you really feel. I'm sure Bateman is a helluva guy and a team player with a lot of friends on the team. He seems like a good guy and he even moved to WR when asked. But that doesn't make him the best QB and even his buddies know that. If Bateman starts, the psyche of this team will be very shaky until and unless he is replaced quickly when things go bad. And they will go bad at some point, no matter who starts.

On the Ole Miss start for Bateman, just an observation: I don't know if the plays were called this way to build his confidence or if he just kept checking down to the safe, conservative throw but he was 11-14 because NONE of those throws that I recall were downfield and the majority of them were 7 yards or less with several of them being bubble screens or swing passes to a back. Passes a Jr. High QB would be over 50% on. That's not an indictment of Bateman, just the truth as I remember it.

If Bateman was doing so great vs Ole Piss then why did Saban bench him again?

Did you see the hit he took after the pick? It was Aaron Murray-esque. I'd be surprised if he wasn't concussed

Would it be sour grapes to point out Mo Smith is currently getting 2nd team Star reps at Georgia behind Rico McGraw?

Not at all. Kirby would have him 3rd, but he's scared Mama would run to the media again

Is it sour grapes to hope Kirby goes 7-6 and gets canned by the end of his second season?

Yes. Don't care.

I went back and watched the Ole Miss game from last year and I wasn't impressed with Bateman's short throws. He seemed to have nice zip and accuracy on the 10-15 yard passes over the middle, but the few screens and short slants were usually behind and too high for the receiver.

I'm not bashing the guy, I'm just going off of his play in that game.

I wouldn't read much into it. I'm guessing if he is going to start Kirby still has to pretend like he's making him work for it. Otherwise the other players might be a little upset.

If it's that way come season start though...

I may get slammed but you guys are being too hard on Bateman. He's not my choice to be QB this year but to act like the guy has never seen a football when he was unexpectedly thrust in the lineup against the 2nd best defense in the league is a little unfair. He's not the reason we lost that game. The defense is.

Yes, he had a few plays he should have done differently and I'm sure he'll tell you that himself.

I expect 2 QBs to play in the game. 3 playing would give me heart failure

Unless we're blowing out USC. That would be cool. edit: Talking about the heart failure part. Even in a blow out, I wouldn't expect 3 qbs.

Neither Bateman nor the defense was the reason we lost that game -- five turnovers is the reason we lost that game. The defense played pretty well overall, considering the short field they had to work against much of the game.

Bateman was responsible for one turnover and responsible for putting the defense right back on the field.

It's no different than you making assumptions that they can't do better.

Not making any assumption here just pointing out what some are doing. I for one not convinced Bateman is the guy but I am not going to bash him either.

Every year since I have been on this board it seems if we are replacing the QB many seem to think that the incoming freshman or transfer has to be better then the returner who was the backup. Yet after all the experts here who made their assumption based off a few appearances the year prior that they were not capable. Yet Coker and Sims both proved that wrong.

I remember Phillip Sims came in the year after AJ and many made the same assumptions about Sims being better then AJ and were saying AJ was not capable. Heck I remember other boards saying the same thing about McElroy and thought Star Jackson should be the starter that spring.

In the end I understand everyone wants to win and I for one would be very excited to see Hurts win the battle. I want a QB for 3 years at the helm for a change but in the end the coaches will decide not us and they have been pretty good making assessments. And if Bateman was not a viable option I doubt he would still be on scholarship.

Bateman was supposed to run the read option but he was too scared to keep it when he could have.

Bateman made the coaches look like idiots for starting him. Coker ran the ball more then he did that game.

And if the right choice is Cooper, and he gives us the best shot to win, we're in trouble

I dunno...many folks said basically the same thing 'bout Blake Sims a couple of years ago and he did just fine...

While Hurts intrigues me the most, I'm OK with any of 'em. And if we happen to take a step back and lose 2 or 3 games this year, I don't think it'll all be on the QB no matter who he is. While we've had a recent history of winning with inexperienced QBs, this is the first year in a long time we'll have to do it with inexperienced RBs as well. Also, I expect our OL to be good but this will be the first year in a while where we haven't had an experienced center either. And while our starting defense could even be better than last year, we're not gonna be as deep so hopefully we can avoid major injuries...

That being said, I think we'll lose 1, maybe 2, and be in the mix...

The Ole Miss game was a small sample size. I think the lights were too big for Bateman. He didn't keep on the read, he made some nice throws but nothing deep. It was conservative play and we had to have something different to have a chance to win. We were behind the game because of turnovers. We got into panic mode with Coker and the play calling. When we were throwing bombs with 2 mins left we should have thrown D Henry the screen for 30 etc. It's behind us now.

I am taking the QB competition at face value not what anyone has done before. My scrimmage report highlights what they are doing so everyone can make their own opinion. Obviously the coaching staff is going to go with what they think is the safest choice to win the most games.

This Saturday will tell me a lot and the staff will start making pushes for their guy. After I put up the scrimmage report from this weekend I will start probing what the word is on the street. Please understand this will be fluid and change almost every 4 hours. I will do my best to keep it current. Side note on this, if any flaming BS starts I'll be done posting here. This stuff changes a lot and some opinions are put in by sources. The staff likes to keep it kind of quiet because of one simple reason. If the other team whom is a good one "USC" doesn't know the starter, it's hard to prep. But, I should know the feel by the time we roll around to the week of. Be patient and as always Roll Tide.
