Are these additions? Or new houses? Older houses are a sign of prestige around here, all things being equal.

bit of both but the majority of that money is on brand new houses. It all started with Pike than kinda snowballed till ATO big dicked the rest of us. They basically moved where the actual fraternity row is now.

The article is referencing both new construction and renovations. The new houses that are being built are for fraternities that have been on campus for a long time. My fraternity's house underwent a $2.5mil renovation in 2008 but had been on campus since the 1930s.
Btw, UVa and Alabama both have very similar Greek communities with regard to their presence within the student body and the architecture of their houses. For example, I believe SAE is the biggest fraternity in the US and was founded at Alabama.
The fraternity houses at UVa are really nice but generally speaking the houses at Alabama are just ridiculous.

You would think the Alabama Greek system was evil personified reading this thread. Everyone acts like Greek systems all over the rest of the SEC are all boy scout organizations doing nothing but philanthropy while the Alabama Greek system is guilty of crimes against humanity. The faux self righteous indignation from others is funny.

Since when can people not spend money as they wish?

Always wondered about the Greek system as it was hugely looked down upon at my school. So I never participated but it looks like a ton of fun in the States though. Kind of wish it was a bigger deal at my school, the networking opportunities etc would be nice.
Where do first year students live before they pledge? Can someone explain the pledging process? How do you determine who to pledge with?

I hate when people say shite like this.
It IS going to something useful. People will have jobs and provide for the family with the money they make from the job.

I would feel bad for the independents but they are living in palatial new resort dorms now. UA is getting so big.

They are creating jobs and adding to the economy. Nothing more important than that.

Thread title is a little misleading.
I'm pretty sure SCAR's showcase Greek Village has a far higher total appraised value than $202 million. Almost twice that actually.
