"What we found is the West North Central region has about 41 percent obesity compared to 31 percent obesity in the southern region that includes Alabama and Mississippi," said George Howard, professor in the Department of Biostatics at UAB. "By the way, 31 percent is not a good thing -- but it's not at the bottom." How did Southerners get such a fat reputation? Apparently because they are more truthful.

The study analyzed the weights in the nine geographic regions used by the U.S. Census Bureau.
It found that the West North Central region, which includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and North and South Dakota, ranked fourth in obesity by the telephone survey results. But when actually weighed in the REGARDS study, people from that region ranked first in the nation for obesity.
In the telephone survey results, the East South Central region, which includes Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky, ranked highest. But when weighed, that southern region ranked fifth.
Suck it Mizzou Y'all be the fattest now.

combined with recent findings that the south in fact is not less intelligent than the north and Brad Paisley's song against racism, we may be able to beat ALL of the stereotypes yet.
2013: The south rises again.
2013: The south rises again.

Had a boss standing in my office one day with two other people telling us about an e-mail from his brother about this - how obesity follows the poverty line, through the southeast. Well, only 25% of the people present were neither obese or from the north. Doink!

No, it's just that now it's been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Another BS study based on BMI. Show me this again when the study is based on % Body Fat.

Let me guess, You're just "big boned".
Yes, on a case by case basis, a calculated BMI can be deceiving for individuals that have put on a lot of muscle mass. For this type of study, however, it's just fine. Nobody needs to know the body fat percentage for a 5'3" female that weighs 320 pounds.
