Trying to piece together a childhood memory for a friend, when and how often were double header SEC games held in Jackson? I am 90% sure there was one in the mid 1970’s and the first game was Ole Miss vs. someone and the second game was Bama vs. Miss st. Can anyone help with this? This would be awesome to go to, but not sure how often it happened and how tickets worked etc. Also, did this happen anywhere else in SEC?
Thanks
Thanks

Both schools used to play home games in Jackson, so it was probably just a scheduling thing. Both schools play on campus now.

It used to happen in Birmingham for Alabama and auburn games.

They did schedule doubleheaders on purpose back then. My dad took me to several. You had to have separate tickets for the 2 games, & they cleared the stadium between games. It was cool

Will not happen again. The stadium has been given to Jackson State U. for all their games.......

Two noted games were both major upsets for the Mississippi schools. On September 17, 1977, Ole Miss beat eventual National Champion Notre Dame 20-13. On November 1, 1980, Mississippi State shocked the undefeated and defending national champs Alabama by a score of 6-3. Shortly after the 1980 expansion, however, both Ole Miss and Mississippi State decided to enhance their on-campus stadia to develop the same home-field advantage of their fellow Southeastern Conference members, and gradually stopped playing games in Jackson altogether. The last game played there by an SEC school was a blowout win by Ole Miss over Division I-AA VMI in 1996; the Rebels' last conference game at Jackson was a 1993 win over Arkansas. Mississippi State's last home game at Jackson was a 34-22 victory over LSU in 1990

I think double headers happened once yearly during the Mississippi State Fair, which is held annually in Jackson in October...

Back in the 70s, I guess it was OK to play games in Jackson. Personally, I've always hated it and it's a big reason why Ole Miss and MSU never spent the resources on upgrading their campus stadiums. They played almost all of their big games in Jackson. Ole Miss played a lot of big "home" games in Memphis too.
I don't understand why Arkansas still plays home games in their state capitol. They are the only holdout.

I have no idea how they pulled off even one game there. Where the hell did people park? There isn't room for parking at JSU games.

My dad has told me stories about what a cluster it was outside with 4 different fan bases all jawing at each other. Sounds amazing

You parked in the stadium lots. They would park up and down Woodrow Wilson and also utilize UMC for parking as well. You could also park over in Fondren which is a quick walk to the stadium and at the Farmers Market. When the Saints played the Colts there for their exhibition game post Katrina was the last game I attended at Veteran's Memorial and parking was not an issue.

JSU always bitched about the field by the time they got to use it because it was pretty much ripped up.
I know when they played the Egg Bowl in JXN JSU would always play after us but I can't remember double header SEC games there. My memory pretty much starts when they moved all their games back to campus. I remember the win over LSU in Jxn as that was one of Felkers last games and I remember OM playing Arky their in 93 because I was working at UMC at the time.

It was done a few times in the 1970's- I'm from Jackson and never missed a game there growing up- State or Mississippi. Hell, I never saw a State game in Starkville until my Jr year of HS- most of the good games were in Jackson.
I want to say the DH's were State-Bama and Mississippi- LSU. I know 2 of them had LSU-Mississippi as the night game. State usually played the day game of the DH's.
It was wild. You would go to the 1st game, grab some food on the way out of the stadium, and wait for them to re-open the gates for the next one. They were scheduled at 1pm and 7pm, so you had a couple of hours between games. There were bars and places to eat nearby to pass the time as well.
I wish State would still play one game per season in Jackson

Suggest you contact the various schools involved SID's and ask for help. I rather doubt any fan would recall that information, as I know I don't & I made all of them back then. Thing I remember the most, with no Grove, the O.Miss fans would spread their dainty little blankets on the ground in the shade & have their pregame "picnics".

Actually the plan is to tear that stadium down and turn it into parking space for UMC and build JSU a smaller stadium near their campus. The city gave JSU the stadium but only for ten years. Hell. I doubt anything will change as no one at JSU Is capable of handling that kind of money without stealing the shite out of it. They have proven time and time again they can't be trusted. fricking head grounds keeper riding around in Rolls Royces and shite(actually happened, was Kenneth Stokes cousin so you know they never investigated him)
