From a national standpoint, which program gets credit for it and what year? Based on what I’ve followed historically, here are a few that come to mind from an outsider:

1908 LSU
1917 Georgia Tech
1921-22 Vanderbilt
1925 Alabama
1928 Georgia Tech

1925 Alabama went undefeated and won the Rose Bowl which was a big deal then. 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of that legendary season. I hope the Tide celebrates it in some fashion this season.

In 1921 and 1922, Vanderbilt went a combined 15-0-2 while outscoring opponents 338-37, while earning an SIAA and a SoCon title.

Also finished with the much lauded scoreless tie with Michigan that opened Dudley Field in 1922.

We should. But hasn’t been mentioned to my knowledge.

Long time Alabama beat writer Cecil Hurt, God rest his soul, wrote an article some years before he passed in 2017 that Alabama should schedule Washington to commemorate the 1926 Rose Bowl. I wished Alabama would have listened.

Sewanee Tigers: The greatest team in college football history ...
Sewanee: The University of the South has a rich and notable football history, particularly in its early years when it was a powerhouse in the Deep South. Their 1899 team is often cited as one of the greatest in college football history, winning all 12 of their games, 11 by shutout, and outscoring opponents 322-10. The team's remarkable road trip, playing five shutouts in six days across 2,500 miles, solidified their legendary status.

This was a big deal.

I would have to say, Alabama winning the Rose Bowl brought southern football the acclaim it deserved.

LSU played its first football game ever against Tulane, in New Orleans, in 1893.

without searching it, if I remember correctly, John Heisman at Ga Tech begat Williams Alexander who begat Bobby Dodd (Frank Broyles came from this line)

I'm not sure who begat Wally Butts at Georgia

Wallace at Alabama...

As the other poster said, Heisman was at Auburn, I'm thinking before he later went to Ga Tech

I think that hits the first truly successful big time southern coaches through maybe a little before the 20's and forward

Already been said, but it's 100% Bama's Rose Bowl win in 1925. This permanently changed enrollment in the South and national perception.

Fun Fact: After this win, Wallace Wade started to print Bama football game info in the New York Times to try and draw wealthy northerners to Bama for education and money. Bama has always used football as a strategy for driving enrollment across the country.

Supposedly the train stations throughout the South were packed out with people cheering Alabama en route to California for that Rose Bowl game. All rivalries were put aside, Alabama was playing for the glory and honor of an entire region that was only 60 years removed from being literally conquered and subjugated militarily.
