Why are 90% of OCs too stupid to understand the basics of football?

4 and 1 and you're in the shotgun? You should be fired immediately whether you make it or not.

The problem at this point is a lot of quarterbacks have played their entire career and never been under center.
I sometimes see these guys line up under center and they fumble the snap like half the time.

Milroe would have taken it to the boundary for a 3 yard loss.

They do it in the NFL now too.

I posted it in the game thread.
It should be written into a coach's contract. If you go for 4th and less than a yard out of the shotgun and fail to convert ... you should suffer either a major monetary penalty or resign or be fired.

Can confirm

I've never liked the ball going backward 5 yards before it can go forward 5 yards unless they are going to throw it on that short distance. Some teams don't practice under center though, some QB's don't like it can came up through high school in the shotgun only.

You should be under center but I guess if you never practice it... I could almost see the argument. But then again you should be practicing it

Not only are you snapping the ball 5-6 yds deep, your RB is waiting on his heels to be handed the ball.

That feeling when you suddenly miss the toss dive from the I

Yeah if the problem is QBs don't practice under center at least have a pistol formation so the back has a little momentum

Heard a interview of Troy Aikman while on a project in NY. Discussion was on why so difficult to score for NFL teams from the 1 or 2 yardline? This was about 10 years ago.
Aikman said that his Dallas team would lineup under center, linemen would fire out, he'd hand off to Emmitt Smith and they'd have a TD. Said that currently it's truly difficult to draft linemen that can run block like his teams could. From high school and after, blocking is focused on pass blocking. This is why you see QBs in shotgun even on obvious running downs. It's not the OC's play calling so much as it's what they have to work with.

I remember a qb we were recruiting years ago, don’t remember who it was, but his only drawback was he’d have to learn how to take a snap under center because he had never done. I’d not heard of that happening before.

Yep this, to me, has been one of the biggest changes to the way football is currently played. Almost every offensive lineman recruit, even blue chips, are coached pretty young in pass blocking and the drop off to run blocking is pretty big. It’s funny because it used to be the exact opposite, especially in college.

I'm convinced there's not a single blocking sled anywhere in Tuscaloosa.

The rules have evolved to promote passing. This is the game today. Used to be that your best athlete was the running back or maybe the QB. Currently the best high school athlete wants to be a receiver.
When was the last time you saw the I formation with a real fullback and Ricky Williams or Earl Campbell type running back? Those guys don't exist anymore.

This is correct. Also include centers.

Those guys were 230-240 ... Earl, especially, was playing when he was as big as most DLinemen.
You also never see the pitch sweep, student body left and right, anymore.
The game changed when we started seeing 250 pd LBs and 260 pd DEs that run 4.6 40s. I call it the Levon Kirkland era. Those guys can run sideline to sideline AND plug holes.
Still ... a QB sneak from under center is a thing of beauty when it happens these days. But you gotta have OLinemen that are able to drive ... and that's a rarity these days.
Some of Saban's teams could do it but these days it just doesn't pay to even practice it apparently.
Come to think of it Urbie/Mullen did it at Florida with Tebow ... and that led to the pop pass as well, with Tebow jumping up.
