However, we had a 1 or 2 of 2nd-and-on-schedule downs that got wiped because of a procedural penalty. The combination of penalties and production is putting the offense in a bind on 2nd and 3rd down. QBs like Tua, Mac, and Bryce could drag our asses out of these quagmires but it has really been an issue since 2021. We've got to be one of the most hit or miss offenses on 1st down. We're either hitting big plays or getting off-schedule due to lost yards or ineffective yardage gained. And again, really been like this for 4 seasons now.
This is the best post about this. I completely agree. We go to line up for 1st down and get a penalty and or stuffed on an obvious run play. Generally an inside handoff. The amount of film and scouting we do you would think the scripted drive would go more the tendency of the opposition eg are they susceptible to off tackle as opposed to inside etc. Hell run a reverse on the first play. Spice it up.

Part of the problem is we're not running CKD's true offensive system. He stated earlier last month he would have to wait until next season to install 90% of his offense. We're doing similar to what Tommy Rees and staff did last season and that's run plays that J Milroe runs best and going with that. CKD's offense is built around timing and anticipation, which, unfortunately, is not one of JM's strengths. I don't want to get into a "then why isn't Ty Simpson playing" discussion because it's unproductive. But we're not running CKD's offense that he ran at UW and until we can run that we're just calling plays that JM runs the best. It is very hard to get into an offensive rhythm that way.

Bama 1st down plays against Mizzou each drive
1st drive - 6 yard completion. Drive ended in a field goal
2nd drive - 1 yard run. Drive ended in a punt.
3nd drive - 1 yard run. Drive ended in a punt.
4th drive - 5 yard pass. Bama would go on to have a false start and a holding penalty on the drive and punt.
5th drive - 26 yard pass. Drive ended in a field goal.
6th drive - 4 yard run. Drive ended in a TD
7th drive - 14 yard pass. Drive ended in a TD.
8th drive - Incomplete pass. Drive ended in a punt.
9th drive - 15 yard completion. Drive ended in a TD
10th drive - 15 yard penalty. Drive ended in a punt.
11th drive - 10 yard rush. Drive ended in a TD
This is pretty much how it's been all season. If Bama has a good opening play and doesn't have a penalty it's usually a TD or at worst a field goal.

I am happy with the W, I am not ready to say we have turned the corner yet.

Truth is the A&M fans weren't so excited about their hire. Elko is a good coach and perfect for A&M.
I am hoping Kalen is going to be a great fit for Bama. This time next year we will know for sure.

Without having seen this chart I would have said something like:
quote:
Most scoring drives have at least one conversion for a new series of downs. Most conversions for a new series of downs happen in a series where the first down play goes for at least 4 or more yards.
And look at that chart confirming my exact point...
Most defenses come out mentally prepared for the first series of downs. Getting that first, first down is incredibly predictive of a defense not reorganizing itself well and giving up points.

And another thing, teams are playing Alabama to take away the shot plays that Milroe does so well. That means Alabama is going to have to score on drives where they string 5 or more plays together far more often than they were earlier in the season.
When teams do this, you have to out-execute them and we're not getting all 11 on the same page often enough. Too many penalties, too many busted protections, too many poorly thrown balls, too many poorly ran routes.
Ultimately, in college the most unstoppable combo is being able to hit the shots but also being able to run effectively whenever you want. This is why the 2020 offense was the best in school history and arguably the best in college football history. They could get the shots in the air but could run the ball whenever they needed to by how they're getting defended or game situation dictating it.
I'm not even sure Alabama needs to become a very crisp passing attack to be an elite offense this year. They just need the run game to improve dramatically. Everything would snap to grid if Alabama could run for effective yards when they need it.

Seeing a lot of people overreacting to Saturdays 34 - 0 win. Offense was sluggish, especially in the first half. Defense was solid but given Missouri was out their QB and leading rusher don't think we can take much from that.
Milroe's passing game is still lacking. Nothing gave me any confidence that things will be different for the passing game in Baton Rouge. Slow processing, throwing behind the receiver, overthrowing the receiver, throwing to the wrong receiver. holding the ball too long. Same old, same old.

Sounds simple but the OL isn't good enough to run the ball when we really need to be able to run. It would be great if 1 could stay healthy and be able to play with 2 and 5 over and over in the passing game. You have to keep 45 or 87 out behind 57 on passing downs to help prevent a sack. 87 (Brian Kelly's dance partner) is coming along at TE but has yet to show he can catch.

Some of you are delusional and have no idea what goes on on the sideline. Of course, he's going to be coaching them up—that's his job. You're acting like that's some big deal. That proves absolutely zero about what's going on in the locker room. LOL
I was a HS football coach for 22years with many clinics from great college minds thrown in , so I know a little about what goes / should go on with players . If you had read , I linked a post on X by a guy responding to podcasts about the subject . Hope all works out for KDB and the Tide

Yeah we should probably remain miserable despite any signs of improvement and success from the team. What are these people thinking attempting to be happy about a win? Preposterous!!!

And they each get roughly 10 carries or less per game. You can’t run the ball effectively if you don’t commit to it enough that it’s a significant part of the offense. We’re running the ball successfully, but using it at the level of “keeping the defense honest.”

Couldn’t agree more. It’s not that we can’t run, it’s that we don’t run

Our interior OL has not lived up to the preseason hype and the right tackle is a liability but not to the degree his backup has proven to be.
We just can't move bodies consistently so our run game is heavily predicated on pin-and-pull, counters, misdirection, etc. I love those runs but I don't think they can ever really pop off like they can given we don't do inside or outside zone runs well.
I always loved that Shanahan run offense where they get you flowing to the play side of the outside zone then hit you with some sort of counter action to punish the front for pursuing the edge. Given that our OL clearly are no earth movers, it would seem like the outside zone + counter combo would be the thing to do because neither really require a ton of strength to run effectively.

That was a zone blocking scheme and those Broncos OLs were always among the lightest in the NFL. It seems that DeBoer prefers the smaller, more nimble type OLs, so we shall see if it gets better in the long run. This lack of running is certainly a source of frustration for many of us.
