Saban on how he had to change the way he coached players

From the Pat McAfee Show today, via AL dot com. Thoughts?
“I changed a lot through the years because the players actually changed in terms of what their commitment was, what their purpose was in terms of why were they going to college? What were they trying to accomplish. You had to kind of adapt your program and the way you approached them.
“You had to make things ... when I first started coaching, if you told a guy to do something, he would run through the wall for you because you said to do it. It‘s not like that anymore. You‘ve kind of got to show these guys where it’s going to benefit them.”
Saban added that he had to show players how what he was telling them would create value for them individually and how being part of a team would benefit them long-term.

And I imagine successful college coaches are a lot more inclined than they were in the 1970s to ask the AD how a situation will benefit them too.

Times change. Saban was really good at adapting.
Saban: going fast is not good for the player’s health
NCAA: we aren’t changing
Saban: ok I’m going to go fast with the best players in college football.
Puts more rings on his hand

Saban's biggest strength was teaching that every play has 11 individual plays within. If you win the majority of those 11 you win the big one and the game.
The other thing is that Saban hated losing more than he loved winning. Massive motivation.

So much for recruiting high character players.

With the portal and nil so new, most all coaches have taken the appeasement route to manage the roster. I believe starting soon, they will do a reversal.
As of today, Bama is leading the way in how not to handle navigate.

Eventually there will be an equilibrium reached with this stuff. We’re never going back to the days of absolute dictator coaches no matter how much fans on message boards yap for it, but the wide-open stuff for the players is going to get reined in contractually. You want to walk, fine, but there’s going to be financial consequences.

I wonder if there are coaches who are testing the waters on this theory in reverse. They're upfront in telling recruits that they are going to be coached hard & criticized & corrected when needed. Not out of malice, but to improve themselves & the team. Portal be damned.
Imo, every young player needs to be shown Tom Brady's speech at Gillete Staduim when they inducted him into the Patriot Hall of Fame. He explains perfectly why the bedrock of playing football is overcoming hardships. Overcoming adversity. Proving to yourself that you're tougher than you ever thought you could be. Football is not easy & it never will be. It's meant to be hard bc life is hard. You can't just cut & run bc it becomes difficult.

I’m a college professor and do & preach this every day… doesn’t matter, they think they know better than you because they have a few thousand “followers”. Now add in that some make millions of dollars to play a game and you get the version of college football we have now. frick you, pay me… that’s the mentality. NIL and portal killed college sports…

We are so screwed if we enter WW III and the draft is implemented.

Pretty sure the whole world would be screwed if there's a WWIII.

This is overblown because people want to try to justify their dislike of NIL and the portal.
Tom Brady couldn't overcome hardships so he went to Tampa.
Peyton Manning couldn't overcome hardships so he went to Denver.
Joe Montana couldn't overcome hardships so he went to KC.
Jalen Hurts couldn't overcome hardships so he went to OU.
Troy Aikman couldn't overcome hardships so he went to UCLA.
Joe Burrow couldn't overcome hardships so he went to LSU.
Bunch of pussies.

At least we’re not FSU. They are the ones leading by example.
