DeBoer Says: Players Are Having Trouble Learning

If you listen to his latest press conference, and read between the lines, this is essentially what he's saying.
He mentioned that some of our defensive calls have the same name from a year ago, but they're something totally different now. I'm sure he's referencing a particular instance or so where the defense has gotten confused by this.
Someone asked him about in-game adjustments on defense. He said that they try to plan before the game as well as possible, but when opposing offenses are throwing the kitchen sink at you, and new things you've never seen on tape, there's not much they can do. Why? Because the defense has a hard enough time running the base defense, plus the gameplan defense. In order to adjust to things they've never seen, they'd need to have a better grasp of the entire defensive playbook to be able to draw from things that aren't base, and aren't in the gameplan. Therefore, they try to keep the in-game defensive adjustments to a minimum so that the players can still play with confidence.
He says this has happened everywhere he's been. The first year is always up-and-down because the players are inexperienced in the new scheme, and with the new playbook and concepts. With more games, and more reps, they're able to bank more and more concepts, and the playcalling can expand more and more.
If you think about it, this is a perfectly logical explanation, and it's something we should've expected.
Let's all calm down and remember this is a massive transition year.

Year 3 he will be saying the same thing
I never hear pro coaches saying their players can only function at a elementary level and maybe in a few years they can grasp our quantum mechanic system of football.

is that similar to wave-particle duality coverage our db's did under Saban?

I'd mentioned this in another thread. I figured with a new staff (for the most part), new/different offense/defense/special teams, new terminology, and a crap load of true freshmen playing a lot in the secondary, there were going to be some struggles. Think about this, in their first year coaching at Bama:
Coach Bryant 5-4-1
Ray Perkins 8-4
Gene Stallings 7-5
To automatically assume that there were going to be no growing pains is a bit naive and unrealistic.

Why the hell would you use the same terminology as last year for something different this year? These guys get paid MILLIONS to coach and have to do NOTHING but think about football. They don’t have to worry about teaching history classes, painting the field, or what they’re going to do if their car breaks down and costs more to repair than they can really afford. They have no other concerns. Nothing to distract their focus.
Given that, how do you not think to talk to veteran players as you implement the defensive terminology and make sure nothing is confusing to them for any reason? If red meant right and blue meant left under Saban, and red means left and blue means right under DeBoer, someone is a dumbass. Either the coaches for not asking or the players for not telling - or both.
This seems like a self-created problem.

They need to bring in the same tutors that have them passing classes. Wait, the tutors can’t play football for them like they take their tests, yea I said it.
The coaches need to do a better job of getting the guys ready. What did they do in the spring and summer?

I thought The Swarm was a simplified plan to be fast, attack the ball, and create turnovers defense. Now it’s too complicated?

Not directed solely at anyone but some of y’all’s mental acuity is less than that of a retarded guy that would jerk it under the cafeteria table in High School.

I’m smart enough to have your sister jerk it for me.
I’m not saying the players are dumb, if theyare smart enough to take upper level college courses they don’t have trouble learning. In college ball the turnover is constant, more now with the portal. Every year someone is going to be learning so the coaches have to make it easier.

Well she has a special affinity for M&Ms and is retarded, too. Lucky for you, she gravitates towards your micropenis.

Apparently take terminology familiar to the players and make it mean something totally different. Genius.

DeBoer basically said it’s 6 games in with a new defensive scheme. The team is going through learning the scheme and ensure they have enough reps.
In terms of defensive scheming, I’m ok with DeBoer installing his own and going through these pains now. You have to rip the bandaid off sooner than later. This would happen with any coach we hire (outside of Kirby? potentially).
I’d rather front load the program with issues rather than have them linger across multiple seasons.
ETA: YoY comparisons shouldn’t happen.its always a massive change when you have a new coaching staff change. Teams adjust at various speeds. It’s even an apple/orange comparison from last year.

Don't confuse student with athlete just because they are called student athlete that is more of a myth especially in todays climate.

How many hours does the new coaching staff have a week with the team?
20 hours? Isn’t that the rule?

It's the rule, but no football player only spends 20 hours a week practicing.

Its almost like...it takes time to transition to a new program

Because people are fricking idiots and have no idea how significant these transitions are. They think because of the talent and resources he inherited, there'd be zero growing pains and we'd win every game 907373-0. Never mind the fact that our secondary was a concern and our QB is Jekyll and Hyde.
I'd love to go back and read what people on this sub had to say about Sark and Kirby in their first seasons at Texas/UGA because I bet it's almost copy/paste identical. And don't tell me they didn't inherit a goldmine of talent as Sark inherited four top 10 classes (three of which were ranked third) and went 5-7 with a laughably easy schedule.
17 consecutive years of success absolutely spoiled this fanbase and I bet the same retards said in 2007, "Shula didn't lose to Louisiana Monroe".

IDC what anyone else thinks really bc that is their opinion , but I am very glad we were able to make the hire we did. There may be some growing pains but for the love of god , give the man a chance

Im 100% in support of Kalen DeBoer and believe that he will win big at Alabama.
The defensive calls and/or execution is a trainwreck right now. I don't claim to know why, but the what isn't good on that side of the ball. LBs are tentative and soft and the safeties are tied in knots. The young / new CBs get a free pass IMO for busts, but the safety bust rate is completely unsustainable if we want to beat other elite teams.
On offense I suspect that if we get Proctor / Roberts / Pritchett healthy at the same time our offense is as good as anyone in the country. Unfortunately we've only really had that maybe one week so far this year so we're sputtering because we can't sustain drives.
Milroe also took a huge step forward against UGA then a huge step back against USCe. Until the OL can sustain the rushing attack the offense will be determined by the effectiveness of Jalen Milroe to process looks and make plays.

I don't know why anyone would downvote this. It's the truth.
