We're just over a week away from some exhibition action so figured now would be as good a time as any to start the season thread. We've appeared to majorly upgrade the roster top to bottom and this might be the best overall roster we've had in a long, long time. Granted the rest of the league is damn good too but I really like what we've got.

Really looking forward to watching the young talent this year. I’m also intrigued with the Leffew/Montgomery combo we got in the portal. They destroyed us last year.

me too. Looks like montgomery will be suspended for a while so we'll have to wait a bit on him.
I just love that seemingly for hte first time in a LONG WHILE we have solid, quality depth at every single position. Can't tell you how many times we've had least one position where after the starter it was just a collection of warm bodies filling out a jersey but this roster has it all. I'm trying not to get my hopes up but I don't see why this team can't make the tourney.

Dominique Wilkins was my childhood hero and the other day I watched highlights of his son. Pretty incredible. I stopped watching at some point during the Felton years, but maybe I will start back at some point sooner rather than later.

Really excited for this team. Going to be even tougher with the SEC expansion. Feel like this is a bubble team that could make noise if the young players and transfers play up. Let’s go Dawgs!

I'd take a tourney appearance I guess, but that really should be the low end of our expectations for year 3.
No other UGA coach has had this much support. This also has to be what, a top 5 roster in our history? He needs to produce some results.

Serious question.
What's the SEC record for most consecutive years without an NCAA tourney win since the tournament expanded in the early '80s, and is the answer to the question us?

Jim Herrick won a tourney game and got upset by Bobby Night/Southern Illinois in the next round. Ironically, Jim got tossed late in the game for kicking/tossing a chair

I try to really keep my expectations in perspective when it comes to hoops. Throughout the entire history of our pgoram, simply MAKING the tourney is a fairly rare and incredible accomplishment. Winning is even more rare. I fully agree that White has a ton going for him and things are trending way up but I can't tell myself that if we fail to make the tourney he should be fired. I'd be just as pissed as anyone else, btu my main thing that I've said the last 3 years is I just want to see constant progress.
Year 1- 16 wins, 6 SEC wins, no postseason
Year 2- 20 wins (16 in regular season), 7 SEC wins, 3 postseason victories en route to NIT semis
That's clear progress, in addition to majorly upgrading our recruiting. We've had 16 regular season wins in both years. This year let's say we go 17-13 regular season (improvement) and win 2 SECT games (also improvement) to end with 19 wins, but we still miss the tourney and end up with the #1 seed in NIT? That would be progress in almost every way EXCEPT for the main one we want to see. It jsut *feels* wrong to try to fire a guy for doing that espeically at a program like ours. Who would want to come here after that? That'd be like vanderbilt or SC football hiring a coach and saying he's got 3 years to make it to a BCS-level bowl game or he's fired.

I have to agree with the guy above. Feel like this year is tourney or bust
For whatever reason, some people will insist our team doesn’t have a lot of talent, but that is not even remotely the case
Recruits
Newell - 5 star (#15)
Somto - 4 star (#46)
Demary - 4 star (#72)
Blue Cain - 4 star (#77)
James - 4 star (#78)
Drezgic - 3 star (#148)
Transfers
Lawrence - 4 star (#80)
Leffew - 4 star (#133)
Montgomery - 3 star (#285)
Abson - 3 star (#299)
Godfrey - 3 star (#345)
There’s really no excuse for why we shouldn’t be in the top half of the SEC. We are recruiting well and spending a lot of money on NIL

who? This is maybe the most talented roster top to bottom (on paper) we've ever had.

because every other SEC program is spenidng and recruiting just as good or better than we are. That's not a knock on us by the way, I love what we're doing and where we're heading. But everyone else has 4 and 5* guys on their rosters too.
Posted on 10/15/24 at 2:48 pm to WG_Dawg
I see what you mean, but I just can’t see an objective reason why we shouldn’t be better than that.
Lamont Paris and Mike White both took over dumpster fires in the same year. Our program had far more raw talent than SC last year and spent way more money. Yet they won 26 games and were a 6 seed in the tournament.
CMW has to get more out of our players this year.

Plenty of people in this thread last year saying we just didn’t have the talent to compete

Completely disagree.
5th best class in SEC in 2023
5th best class in SEC in 2024
And that’s recruit + transfer combined.

"to compete" would be a silly thing to say. To be great though? Who were the best and I mean BEST/most talented guys last year? Noah, Jabri, Silas? I mean those guys are solid but they aren't all-SEC type guys. A lot of guys that were really good role players for us last yera (Anselem, RJ) couldn't cut it at their other schools.

The 2023 class was a nice solid class.
I love the 2024 class but they haven't played a minute yet.
In basketball with only 5 guys on the court, having 1 elite guy completely changes the entire dynamic on the court. It's not the case at all with football since you've got a ton more people and 1v1 matchups happening on every play. AEdwards and KCP are the only guys in 20 years that are that game changing, all american, "can win a game by himself" kind of dude. The rest fo the league seems to have those kind of guys a lot more often than we do.
That's another reason though I'm so optimistic about this yera. Pairing Asa wiht the rest of the roster should be fantastic.
