Milestone Watch: Will Payton Thorne join the exclusive 50 Interception Club this season?

The active leader in Career Interceptions Thrown is Auburn's very own Payton Thorne with 40.
But while 40 is an impressive number in its own right, Thorne has a chance to accomplish something truly special this season and join one of the most exclusive fraternities in the sport: The 50 Career Interceptions Thrown Club.
What's more, if he maintains his current rate of throwing picks for the remainder of the season, he'd end up with 49. But keep in mind he was also benched for a game and a half, so if you take that into account, he's actually currently on pace to hit 50 with his current level of performance.
Only 74 players since 1956 have thrown this many interceptions, and nobody has managed to touch this lofty threshold since New Mexico State's Tyler Rogers in 2017, an unprecedented drought of almost 7 seasons now. As a sport, I think we're ready for a new member of the club.
Thorne stands on the precipice of greatness. I for one believe he can get there. One of the more compelling storylines to keep an eye on for the remainder of the season.

I watched PT last year and didn't think he was the problem. He kinda reminded me of the UGA QB Stetson Bennett without the surrounding players.
Offensive coaches should have made it VERY clear all we want is use clock and kick to win the OK game.
It's crazy. AUB may be a team that ruins someones season this year.
I hope it's not Bama's....and i think we make the playoff reguardless, if we stay hungry and healthy, plus keep improving.

I'm with ya brotha. I'm officially ridin' gun on your #ThorneWagon.
He could really get back on pace this weekend in Athens if he locks in imo.
50 is in sight as long as the Auburn fanbase get their shite together and support Freeze starting him every game for the rest of the season, I think we can accomplish great things.

Maybe this is the year the single game SEC record for interceptions gets broken?

One of the great unbreakable records in our sport.
Consider that John Reaves had 59....in 3 seasons. To take nothing away from Payton Thorne - the current GOAT of throwing picks - but he is currently playing in his 5th season by comparison.
Reaves on the other hand led the SEC in picks all 3 seasons that he played. That's incredible consistency. Fair to say that as good as players like Thorne are at throwing the ball to the other team, nobody has ever been better at throwing picks in the SEC than the great John Reaves.

The quarterbacks on the list from the 1960s is insane. How the frick do you throw 70 interceptions in the 1960s

No one will ever throw more interceptions than Jarrett Lee did. I don't care what the record books say. Never.

Scooter Moorelander and Oscar Ramirez threw 40 in 2 seasons.
Impressive.
Impressive.

I remember when we signed him and I went on the Michigan State boards and asked about him. They said that he’s OK but he will inexplicably throw interceptions at the worst possible time. Wish I could find that quote.

Is it coming full circle?
RIP John Reaves

In the lone setback at Auburn, Reaves threw nine interceptions...

Coaches back in the day used to say, "Only 3 things can happen when you pass the ball, and 2 of them are bad."
