Sports betting and gambling seem to keep becoming a bigger part of college sports. It is definitely more widely accepted and talked about today. We know that players, coaches and even at least one referee have been caught doing it.

2007 NBA Betting Scandal

quote:

Donaghy has claimed that instead of using his position as an on-court referee to advance his bets, he exploited his insider knowledge to wager on NBA games, regardless of whether he was officiating them. However, some of Donaghy's co-conspirators cooperated with the government and claimed that they only became involved because Donaghy offered a high win rate on the games which he officiated. Similarly, Donaghy's best friend, Tommy Martino, noted that during most of the scandal's four-year span, Donaghy only offered bets on games which he officiated. Furthermore, Donaghy's betting predictions for the outcomes of games which he did not officiate were typically incorrect, so the co-conspirators generally avoided placing bets on such matches. Researchers with access to Donaghy's offshore betting accounts, electronic betting records, and betting line data have demonstrated that most of the betting activity involved games officiated by Donaghy
.

For all the ones caught doing it, I am certain there are exponentially more that aren’t caught. Do you think there are referees that are actively trying to impact the results of games?

I do. There are so many referees out there, and it would be so easy to do, I don’t see how it isn’t happening.

The NCAA did so much to clean this up after the very infamous Arizona State point shaving incident that all this would totally destroy all that work they have done.

Well, that settles it then. Surely no one would want to ruin the hard work of the NCAA.

There's has been enough money bet on football for sometime now to make it statistically likely this has been going on for sometime.

There is billions and billions bet on the games. So without a doubt there is motivation for people. It's not hard to keep people quiet when you hand them over life changing money.

And honestly it could get dark, it would be cheaper for them to threaten the families and that makes it more likely people keep quiet.

sounds crazy? remember it's easily billions of dollars we're talking. you have all seen the sopranos bozos like that do that crap for a few hundred k a year.

It would be hard to believe that this isn't going on at some level.

Gambling on NFL games alone is a $27 Billion per year industry and that's just what's on the books legally.

It's estimated that college football brings in over $1 billion annually in bets.

With that kind of money flowing in, it would be more likely than not that this is happening at least at some level.

Absolutely! Saints vs. Shams a few years ago is all the proof anyone needs.

It seems like it would be very easy to get a couple of referees in your pocket. First offer them a carrot of $100,000 or so. Then, once they have taken the money, you have a stick to threaten them with too. If someone was smart, they could get several different head referees in their pocket. No, you wouldn’t ask them to fix every game. Just one here and one there. When I see a line move suddenly by a couple points, it makes me wonder what is going on. It has to be happening, there is just too much opportunity and millions of dollars on the line.

The integrity and ethics of the pro game is destroyed. Now every single game is under the microscope.

When you label yourself as "sports entertainment", fans will never take it seriously again. I had a fan told me he is just following it now because of the betting.

I will say it again, if you think the refs are cheating and/or biased there are 16 teams in the SEC. It would only take 12 votes to remove all the refs. No school has ever even proposed doing that

This is an ongoing topic to be talked about so it needs to keep going. It's so bad that even there's a YouTube channel that is dedicated to analyze the shenanigans.

A former neighbor was in NOPD Vice for 25 yrs, the majority of his focus in his last 10 yrs was illegal gambling. He said that he found that a lot of illegal sports betting involved smaller college games, basketball & football. Because no one paid those games any mind. But he added that "professional gamblers" would spend thousands of dollars researching & keeping tabs on refs throughout both sports, at all levels. As in who had major debts or had other issues to where they can be manipulated. But he added :" make no mistake, refs can and are being bought at different levels".

Yes, to what level and how many are doing it? I have no clue but I 100% believe there are those behind the scenes be it refs, conference officials etc. that either directly and actively try to influence games and also let it be know preferred outcomes of games that will benefit the conferences bottom line. Why? because there is too much money involved for them to leave it completely to chance.

We need to start with getting rid of the old refs. They should all be under 50 and pass agility tests. The game is too fast for a lot of these guys and they are out of position.

There will always be rogue referees on occasion, but anyone thinking that there's a mass conspiracy to influence the outcome of games from the NCAA or the SEC or ESPN needs to have their head examined and is likely on the paranoid schizophrenic specture.

Intentional cheating, for a variety of reasons, has always happened and always will.

For the most part, SEC refs TRY to do a fair job, IMO. They just seem to miss a few big calls and sometimes favor the better team.

How do you explain so many people believing that the outcome of some games are predetermine? It especially seems to be a wide spread belief in regards to the NFL. Do all these people have schizophrenia?

There are just too many inexplicably bad calls, or obvious missed calls, that seem to consistently benefit the team with the larger TV market to chalk it up to coincidence. But the idea of a league influencing results is a totally different subject than corrupt refs. Interestingly, in the NBA scandal it came out that league officials had instructed officiating crews on how to call certain playoff games (let em play vs. blow the whistle on any contact). This could obviously favor one team over another based upon style of play.

In SEC games, you constantly hear about the league’s officiating office putting an emphasis on certain rules. There is no doubt that league offices do give referees marching orders. The motivation behind this is the only thing up for debate.

But back to corrupt officials/referees being paid off, I absolutely believe it happens. I don’t know how widespread it is, but I bet it happens more than we would want to believe.
