Worst QBs to win a national title

Here are some that appear in my head
Tee Martin
Greg McElroy
Craig Krenzel
Ken Dorsey
Please only include QBs from 1980 on.
I suspect that McElroy is probably the absolute bottom.
Krenzel was little if any better than McElroy in college, but somehow he ended up starting some NFL games.
Martin was mostly pedestrian, although he did set the NCAA record for completions to start a game.
Dorsey has better stats than the other guys, but I suspect that a random SECRant poster probably could have QBed the 2001 Canes to a top 10 ranking.

The Michigan qb this year

Bama doesn't annihilate LSU without McCarron's passing against one of the best college defenses I've ever seen. So, pretty dumb to have him listed here.

JJ McCarthy was the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft and you think he’s on the same level as the other guys I mentioned?
The guys I mentioned were drafted in the 5th round (Krenzel, Martin), sixth round (Dorsey) and 7th round (McElroy). Regardless of how well the player actually does in the NFL, the NFL draft is a very good way to judge how highly somebody was regarded after their college career ended.

McCarron still makes these losers cry at night. He owns them.

I would say John Shaffer of 1986 Penn State off the top of my head. Very pedestrian. That PSU team had no business beating Miami in the Fiesta Bowl that year.

Buck Belue in NC 1980 game for UGA. Think hes was 1 for 7 or 1 for 8 for around 10yds...

You didn't even name the worst Alabama QB to win one.

Gino Torretta if he won one. Was totally carried by the players around him. Just had to throw high in the general area with his receivers.

Won two national titles, a Maxwell Award and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.
Greg McElroy would have been a better name for the list.

AJ under Kiffin or Sark would have a lot more records. He was a solid QB. A Bama great by almost all measures who put a lot of emotion into the game and wasn't afraid to lead and hold others accountable.
The NFL is a crap shoot. It's as much about timing, opportunity, and luck of the situation around you as much as anything. Still, he made a lot of money holding a clipboard and there isn't anything wrong with that.

This. GMAc or Coker in Saban era would have been better. But, Barker was the worst NC winning QB at Bama to win in at Bama in the specified time frame.

You don't win a national title one year and a Heisman the next by sucking, no matter who you're playing with. He wasn't All-World but he was a good college QB.

I meant to say McElroy. Edited it now.

Bama has a couple I can think of in Greg McElroy and Jay barker

I actually meant ti say McElroy. It’s easy to get the Mc Alabama QBs in the late 2000s/early 2010s confused.

No he wasn't that good. Didn't hardly need touch at all. Huge arguments back then you could have stuck any QB back there.

I will give McElroy credit for being clutch late in the Auburn game and playing very well against Florida in the SECCG.
1992 Jay Barker is easily the worst of the Bama QB's. Barker was a good QB as a senior in 1994, but he was pretty weak as a sophomore.
