Why do all the dawgs claim REM?

The B52s are way better!

Most of us claim neither.

Both a pretty damned good. Don’t know any Dawg fans or Athens area residents who claim either. In my experience the B52s are kind of un-known in Athens and REM is just folks down the street…Outside of the UGA community in Athens Athens is pretty much a small country town…it’s a great area to live but it’s really 2 separate communities…UGA and the rest of Athens.

Athens was once a hotbed for Indy/alt music. REM and the B-52s had the most commercial success. Not all Dawg fans are into that kind of music so...

Athens a a great college town. It’s my favorite place to go for an away game by a long shot…

Widespread Panic is the answer here

Well, both bands were UGA students when they started so they have a pretty direct connection to UGA. Widespread Panic were also formed in a UGA dorm by JB and Houser.
Whereas bands like the Drive By Truckers (pre-Isbell departure) were more just Athens-based, not really UGA affiliated. REM has definitely gone more “Athens is home but UGA isn’t our vibe” whereas B52s are still pretty big UGA fans.
FWIW Athens is getting a minor league hockey team and hve named them the Rock Lobsters

Not even close, and I am a big B-52's fan.

The “end of the world as we know it” scene in Tommy boy alone is enough for them to top the B52s

REM is still among the more unique sounds out there. Stipes vocals, Mills backing vocals and bass lines, Buck’s guitar/mandolin/whatever instrument he felt like throwing in there are just a quintessential college sound.
UGA has offered them a mint and even said they’ll cut a check to any charity they want to get them to reunite and play Sanford Stadium but they’ve passed each time.

John Berry, the country singer, graduated from UGA with my brother. I met him once when he was singing at a nightclub called the Yacht club there in Athens. This was before he got famous. Great guy. So, there is some country music roots there too.

True, but you cannot deny the uniqueness of the B-52's as well. Both the vocals and guitar licks were piercing and different. It was silly and nerdy and also had an awesome driving beat at the same time.

What’s the frequency Kenneth is my fav rem song but I like a lot of their stuff. Matthew sweet was from that area too I believe, dude was getting close to emo before it got big but with college Indy rock vibes. Always liked his music

Matthew Sweet is from Oklahoma. He moved to Athens to be “from Athens” because it gave him a better chance of being discovered at the time. Athens was Seattle before Seattle was Seattle with regard to Indy/alt rock.

They’re both good but weird as frick.
It’s kind of cool seeing them around town. I can always tell Stipe is working out at the Athens Y because all of his oddball entourage is wondering the halls. There’s one guy who wears rain boots, googles, and has two giant circles tattooed on his forearms.

I’d probably trend Driver 8 or Radio Free Europe as my favorite. Athens area has produced some great indy acts (neutral milk hotel, reptar, of Montreal, pylon, band of horses, the whigs). Colt Ford is also from Athens

I was in Gainesville at the time... must have been a lot of good drugs in Athens back then...
BTW REM is one of my favorite bands... B-52s were great but just who they were.
Must add: We were sitting in a dark bar on University Ave in Gainesville listening to a band... Tom Petty snuck in from the back and took over the stage.. Great memory!

If there were any brains in Georgia, they would claim Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Little Richard.

The way I see it is the best two or three B52 songs are a little better than the best REM songs. Catchier and more fun to listen to than REM's best stuff... which is more angsty sounding.
BUT... the entire REM catalog is better than the rest of the B52 songs. Other than Love Shack, Roam and a few others... B52 stuff is pretty average.
