Yep. College football sucks now. Agree

I don't blame him for not wanting to deal with that after the career he's had. Roster and NIL management has to be brutal with all of the changes.
He said it's freaking brutal for a coaching staff with the portal opening in early Dec + early signing period on Dec 20th. On top of that, teams are wrapping up the regular season, practicing for bowls and players opting for the NFL Draft. Coaches are recruiting their own rosters + trying to close on high school kids, portal kids + the money aspect with NIL.
Its evident changes are needed.

As an LSU fan, I love what Kelly is trying to do...but I am concerned he is about 15 years too late to build and maintain a program in the manner he is trying.
I feel for teams that have to hire new coaches now more than I used to. It's a damn feeding frenzy.
Alabama's coaching search could not have gone better. In 48 hours they hired a coach that was just in the National Championship game and they still lost 30 players to the transfer portal.
That's fricking nuts.

Saban was always all about control. He controlled the boosters, he controlled the money and "added value" going to recruits, he controlled the team. He also controlled a number of advantages very few college teams could access and now that door has been kicked wide open.
None of this is going to be good for anyone. It's going to result in bad football, lower interest and ultimately lower pay for these college players. But I don't feel the slightest bit sorry for Saban. He played the game with a loaded deck and now that's been taken away.

I wonder what younger nick saban would say to that response.
He would say well done old man. You have earned the right to leave on your terms. The old dog doesn't have to learn new tricks if he has stacked up enough cash. My hat is off to him. He is the best that has ever done it.

And "load management" is coming to a stadium near you soon.

Only an idiot would see this as a Nick Saban problem and not an issue for college football and society as a whole

Cant hate on anyone who is "less" of a fan now. The sport is trending down.

Great quote you provided there (haven’t read the article yet).
I have never put Saban on a pedestal for personal excellence beyond simply being the GOAT college football coach- he certainly has his faults. So I’ll just say that all the damaged rival fans already lashing out and clutching their pearls in this thread simply because they were confronted with this unassailable wisdom are surely part of these younger generations who simply don’t understand the concepts of hard work, self respect, doing something that’s bigger than yourself, etc.

If you scroll down the page, there's another article where they interview 12 former assistants about Saban. Some pretty interesting anecdotes.
Here's one from Kiffin.
Here's one from Kiffin.
quote:
THE WEEK BEFORE the 2016 national championship game, Saban abruptly cut ties with Kiffin, who was his offensive coordinator and playcaller for Alabama's semifinal win over Washington. Saban had Sarkisian, then an offensive analyst, call plays for the title game against Clemson; the Tigers would beat the Tide 35-31 on a last-second touchdown. Kiffin had been named Florida Atlantic's coach a few weeks earlier, and Saban didn't feel Kiffin was fully invested in his duties at Alabama.
After Saban retired, Kiffin said he reached out to reiterate what he has told Saban almost every time he has seen him since that parting.
"I just told him that I appreciated him so much, and as I look back now at any issues we had between us, they were 100 percent my fault," Kiffin said. "I didn't see it at the time, but I see it now.
"It's a lot like being a parent. You don't always understand when you're a kid and your parents are telling you things, but then you get older and have your own kids, and you're like, 'OK, now I get it.'"
Kiffin said he apologized for being so difficult, but that Saban was very gracious and talked about what a good run they had together -- three SEC championships, three College Football Playoff appearances, one national title and a 40-3 record, including a 26-game winning streak to end their three years together.
"I would have really struggled with myself as an assistant coach at that stage, and I told Coach that," Kiffin said. "Now I'm the head coach, and I see that. Yes, I would have liked me on game day because there was a lot of success and all the plays that we created. All that stuff would have been great, but always questioning things, wanting to know why and arguing back. ... I don't think I would have put up with it as a head coach."

70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?"
I wouldn’t want to deal with that shite either

and then showing your arse and being frustrated and throwing helmets and doing that stuff
Honestly, Saban comes off bitchy once again. He lost all the inherent advantages he once had and the playing field got level. He took his ball and went home.

No question the portal is over-used. I'm waiting for the statistics that show the vast majority are not picked up. Most, that find a home, trade development, stability, and education for a short-term pop that is spent quickly. Unfortunately, it's the travails of youth. Will they eventually wise up? Doubtful...

I like this paragraph from the article. Saban always talked about building relationships with the players. I think that was something that he enjoyed and really wanted to build with each team. In this era of NIL and the portal, though, building relationships has become a lot less important to players.
quote:
"People wanted assurances that I was going to be here for three or four years, and it became harder to make those assurances," Saban said. "But the thing I loved about coaching the most was the relationships that you had with players, and those things didn't seem to have the same meaning as they once did."

He was also 72 years old. 7 to 10 years older than most people when they retire.
That probably had something to do with it.

Oh like Saban did constantly on the sideline and in press conferences.
Do you recall Gus' calm demeanor when he was ok with those mediocre W/L records and bowl losses?
And before you respond, I'm fully aware that Auburn shite canned both to the tune of +$70MM.
Who wants a coach standing on the sidelines staring into space and showing zero urgency or attention to the details of the game? Or a coach who makes excuses after a loss because he failed to actually coach or get involved in the game prep?
