in 2024. Saw this as a tweet that I think emanated from Tuscaloosa News.

Is Chris Stewart going to take over?

quote:

Is Chris Stewart going to take over?

It sounds that way.

quote:

Longtime Alabama football radio voice Eli Gold, who has served Crimson Tide fans as a play-by-play announcer for 35 years, will not return to the Crimson Tide Sports Network in fall of 2024, according to sources with knowledge of the situation not affiliated with the university.

Chris Stewart, CTSN's play-by-play voice for Alabama basketball, is likely to take over the role. He would likely stay in his role as men's basketball announcer, too.

Per another tweet and a quote from Eli that this was not of his choosing and that the U made the decision not to bring him back. I assume they wanted a full x PxP and did not want another year of a home crew and an away crew. Who knows, but KD may have had a minor roll in making the call.

Best Wishes to Eli but it was time. He probably could’ve chosen a more graceful exit.

He was good back in the day, recently he made seriously dull and bad calls for some of the most exciting plays in school history. It was past time for him to hang it up.

Glad he's still doing well health wise. I actually thought he was older than 70. Anyway, with the changing of the guard in the program it was probably a good time to turn the page.

BREAKING: Eli Gold says he's not returning as the voice of the Crimson Tide, and it was NOT his choice
“I will not be returning. The university chose to not bring me back. I have not retired!”
Gold was the voice of @AlabamaFTBL for 35 years

….

If this is a real quote then it’s further proof he’s lost it mentally and should have stepped down 3 years ago.

Apparently UA chose not to renew his contract.

Eli was awesome until about 4 or 5 years ago. He was so weak and non reactive this year, it was time.

Happy for Chris Stewart, guy is awesome on the call.

I was at too many games this year or with company so I didn't get to hear him much this past season but the general vibe I got from people was he is a shadow of his former self behind the mic. Terrible circumstances but probably the right move from a production quality perspective.

I saw Eli in a Mardi Gras parade a couple weeks ago, and nailed him with a piece of serpentine. It was windy as hell, so it came in fast as hell (honestly, fast enough i was about to apologize). I didn't even realize it was him, until he's already driven by. I probably threw it about 50 feet, which is very far.

I kinda felt bad, because he looked confused as hell. Nobody expects curly paper to move that fast, and i hit him with a bullseye across the upper chest/neck area.

Congrats to Chris Stewart on being named the official voice of “you’re in the car on the way to a damn wedding during the game.”

Seems like there are a ton of bleeding hearts on social media crying about how this isn't right.

I have maintained for more than a decade that Eli wasn't a good play-by-play announcer. It was very frustrating to listen to his call of a game as the only source of information.

Due to his health issues and his inability to travel last year, I assumed he was retiring. I'm a little baffled that he didn't, honestly.

Great ambassador for Alabama, and I'm sure he's a fine man ... but Chris Stewart runs rings around him as a play-by-play announcer.

As a supporter and lover of all things Alabama, I think it's a tacky move. Eli is the voice of Alabama football! Shame on all of you and the horse you rode in on for being happy about this announcement. Let me just say that if you're fortunate to live long enough, you will get old, too. I hope you don't lose your job because of it.
