I think people are being way too negative toward Alabama in these pre-season rankings.
Bama still has the 1st or 2nd most talented roster for next season. I have my doubts about Deboer's recruiting, but that won't impact next season but would rather be felt down the road as recruiting classes go from being 1-2 in the nation to 4-8 in the nation range.
Next year, Bama will have a high talent roster that was coached for a year or two at least by Saban himself. I think they'll be pretty darn good next season. The test for Deboer will be 2026 and beyond.
The other note is how Big 10/SEC laden the top is.
Here are the teams that won't be in the SEC/Big 10 in the top 15 of that poll.
#5 - ND (Independent, both Big 10 and SEC would gladly accept them)
#10 - Utah (Big 12)
#11 - Arizona (Big 12)
#15 - FSU (ACC)
11 out of the 15 are SEC and Big 10. 9 of the top 10. That's a really large skew toward just 2 conferences.

This is great, I may actually be able to bet on Alabama without having to give points. Sooner or later everyone will realize that they will meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I don't know about that. Alabama still has a top 10 roster, but it lost 30 players to the portal (20 before Saban retired and 10 after). Additionally they probably lost 4 first round draft picks and a handful of additional draft picks, which is fairly normal but when combined with much of the experience depth behind those guys also portaling out makes this year quite different. Off the top of my head Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas should have more talented rosters. A couple others probably close. When you combined that with first year coaching staff, I think ESPN's presason ranking of 9 is pretty reasonable. I mean #9 is still pretty damn high and indicates 10 wins and a playoff spot.
