I posted year before last that the team hit the wall sometime in early January. I was roundly criticized but I had tabulated first half vs 2nd half points and shooting % and the fall off was very substantial and consistent. The same drop off happened last year but I didn't make a issue of it b/c the other distractions were at least partially to blame. It takes at keast a year or so for a player to get into the kind of condition that Nate's style of play requires. We only have 3 with that experience this year and one of them can't stay on the floor. This is just a glimpse of what we will see as the season wears on.

The losses are racking up, but no one's perception of this team should be any worse after these 3 games than it was before them. Played 3 top 10 teams on the road (in an away environment), two of which we win with a halfway balanced whistle (one against the #1 team who is a horrible matchup for us). The other game we had a horrible night offensively and looked more panicked and disorganized than we ever have and it took the final minutes for a top 5 team to pull away.

Now this team could crater going forward and lose all confidence after this embarrassing offensive struggle and lingering defensive issues, but we've proven we can hang with the top teams in the country in a hostile environment over these past 3 games. Last night's finish was very disappointing considering we folded like a cheap lawn chair late, but I still have a more positive outlook on this team than I had before these last 3 losses.

For me personally, I don't care about the resume as long as it gets us in the NCAAT. I personally like the ceiling of this team for tournament success this year. We just need to be playing our best basketball in March, and we've proved that "not our best ball" can take down 3 top 10 teams (2 top 5) on a neutral floor.

Ryan Griffin should be on the BENCH. He plays hard but a starter he is not. Takes too many bad shots, turns it over too much and does what they all do, fouls too much. If he WERE a shooter,WHERE is the production?? The problem with this team and let's face it, is we have a team full of role players and no studs.

You are correct that he forces too many shots rather than only taking “in rhythm” 3s, and yet he’s still a 38% 3 point shooter. That means he would be even higher with good shot selection, and most definitely IS A SHOOTER!!

Your other criticisms may have merit, but you doubled down on your bad take and actually proved yourself to be even more wrong.

Now down the stretch, maybe he forces too many and his %s fall. Last year he went ice cold in the last part of the season due to pressing on everything. But so far this season, he’s continued to demonstrate that shooting is one of the things he does well. If you’re going to hate on a guy, make sure it’s fact based and not just making things up.

Crimson, your comment about the team being tired already has 4 down votes. There is none so blind as he who chooses not to see.

If a bunch of college kids are already too tired to play 1/3 of the way into the season then we need a new S&C coach, because that's just a fricking joke. Even NBA teams are really only doing load management on back to backs at that point in the season.

Let's win the next 2 and get a good start in the league.

What's done is done. All those teams were better than us. Let's get our confidence back and move forward.

Grant Nelson shooting 15 3s in a game is moronic. No one but Sears should have a green light to keep shooting no matter how bad their night is going. There’s a reason Nelson was consistently open.

I agree. I think this Bama team will handle lesser opponents with ease and looking at your SEC schedule that's basically 7 wins in the bag. Then I think the math advantage you play with will help you win the majority of toss up games.. so maybe 5-3 On the road against MSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Home against AU, UT, Florida, A&M, and Arky which puts you at 12 wins which would already be a nice conference resume.

A lot of the players we brought in this past off-season are just happy to be at a Alabama. Some committed without seeing the campus. Not only am I second guessing some of the players we brought in, I'm starting to wonder about how good our assistant coaches are.
Poor Man's Version:
#Grant Nelson • low budget Keith Van Horn. Loose dribble. Handles need major work. The one or two highlights he had at NDSU would not be so impressive if he was playing year in and year out in a Power 5.
#Latrell Wrightsell • Tim Hardaway and Trevor Releford body type without the shooting and dribbling ability. I recognized early on in the preseason work out videos that he wasn't that athletic. Nothing about him says major Division One.
#Mohammed Wague • Dollar General Tristan Thompson. Daniel Giddens with a Halloween mask on. If we were playing playground ball I'd pick him in a heartbeat. We're seeing the reason he was a bench player at WVU.
#Aaron Estrada • Walmart Cuttino Mobley. I think he just don't have the confidence right now, he passes up on threes he should shoot and shoots when he shouldn't. Maybe it's the two twigs he has hanging from his hair bothering his eyesight.
If the season was to end right now, I wouldn't be upset. But there's still a ton of ball to be played. The refs haven't helped us and we haven't helped ourselves. SEC teams play physical, maybe the refs gives us a break in SEC play. With five losses already, we can't lose no more than five or six games in the SEC. Maybe we go on a run, it's possible.

This is an insane statement. We lost all three of those games, two of them on a neutral floor. And if your argument is that it wasn't entirely neutral, when you're playing a top 5 team in the NCAA tournament, the fan split ain't gonna be 50/50.

We've also lost to Ohio State on a neutral floor and Clemson at home. In fact, the only P5 win we have is a squeaker over an Oregon team that in all likelihood won't make the tournament. How does that translate to "not our best ball" is better than a top 5 team? "Not our best ball" is not good enough to beat fringe top 25 teams.

I say again he is NOT a shooter. WHERE is the production to back up your crap stats? Is he a double figures scorer? No.

If you take crap shots and brick them, you're not a shooter.

If you commit stupid fouls and turnovers, you're NOT a starter.

I can't fault his effort. Just his production.

These players can be coached up I think, IF we have the staff to do so. Nelson is trying to do things he can't. Get him to do things he can.

I like Wague. He plays hard and let's face it, he's been up against as good as he will see all year lately. He and Pringle both and some of those fouls have been ticky tack.

Estrada is trying to do too much. Let the game come to him take good shots and don't force so much, he has to be smart.

Same with Sears, he can't run point he's a 2. Someone on this team is just going to have to be the point guard to free him up to come off screens and shoot the ball.

Sam Walters. Needs more minutes because for all his shortcomings HE MAKES SHOTS. A year or two from now he could be a 6 ft 10 or 11 230 plus hell of a player IF he gets coaching and the right people to work with him.

Jarin Stevenson. Got to get stronger and older. Period.

You should because he's not producing. Shooters make shots when they matter. Sam Walters is a shooter. Mark Sears is a shooter. Ryan Griffin...is not.

A shooter takes and makes good shots. Griffin doesn't. He does not score points.

I'll ask a question. You're down two and you need a three to win. Are you calling a play for Griffin? That sparkling percentage you know.

Pretty much, he is not a wing. He's not a three point shooter.

Nelson has the size of a power forward, inside skills of a point guard, the outside shooting of a center, and the usefulness of a screen door on a submarine.

The type of season we had last year don't come very often. Brandon Miller was super talented, they don't make too many guys like him as shown with what he is doing in the league right now. He was and is that guy. Noah Clowney's game is a little more tighter than Jaren Stevenson at this point but Stevenson is supposed to be a high school senior right now. He's going to be pretty good given time. Every game he's playing right now is a workout so he's going to get calmer and stronger as the year goes on. Quinerly was and is one of the best ball handlers in college basketball. The late losses of JQ and Charles really hurt this team. With them right now we are a top 5 team. Plus Coach Oats was left standing by himself. New staff and average new players. Everybody is not on the same boat right now. I wouldn't be surprised if we lose another assistant after this season. Something just ain't right. The scheduling is fine. If you want to be considered a big dog, you gotta schedule like the big dogs. That's why we are now on the radars of top recruits. We was dealt a bad hand this off-season.

This is a spot on take. This team is full of role payers.
