The last time a tropical storm made landfall in California was 84 years ago — before there was a system of naming storms.

What other rare things happened in 1939?

My nephew literally moved to Long Beach last week just in time for the storm and a simultaneous earthquake. He said he was expecting clouds of locusts next.

In November of that year, the #1 team in the country beat their conference opponent 13-0 and had outscored their opponents 186-0 at that point, but still fell to #2 in the polls. The team that jumped them had just beaten a team that would finish the season 6-3-1 by the score of 6-2 the week prior.
