There is someone in here downvoting these anti-Golding posts. It must be: (A) the lone member of the Alabama fanbase that thinks he’s doing a good job; (B) Pete himself or a member of his family (his Dad is known to call Finebaum); or (C) a fan of another team that wants us to keep him.

Are we going to at least make an offer to Jim Leonhard? If he wants to be a big-time college head coach he should come to Bama.

I'm not really big on Jim Leonhard. We're pretty much swapping Golding for Jim Leonhard with same results. This year his defense averaged little over 20 points per game. They're not always consistent on field. He can't even beat Ohio State offense. he's like what 0-3 or 0-4.... against Day.
and I think we need to back off on Golding a little for the performance on Auburn:
I really dont' think we'll get rid of Golding. There is nothing out there we can upgrade... Schumann is popular choice but i don't think we can pull him.
and I think we need to back off on Golding a little for the performance on Auburn:
quote:
“I’ll tell you what, Auburn did a great job with the run game. They created some edges. Some of the plays they ran – when I was 10 years old, we ran the single-wing. You guys don’t even know what the single-wing is. But that was my first football (offense). I was the quarterback in the single-wing. But the quarterback doesn’t do anything in the single-wing except block. Some of the plays that they were running with the quarterback, I hadn’t seen them since Pop Warner (laughs). And they’re good plays, and they’re hard to defend. Their quarterback played an outstanding game from a run standpoint, and they executed.
“It’s like playing against Wildcat when the running back’s in the backfield and somebody’s gotta go cover the quarterback, except he’s a good enough quarterback to run. And then they created some Wildcat situations, as well. So they really attacked us on the edges and did a good job of cracking and blocking us on the edges. We practiced against some of that stuff. We didn’t execute it as well as we’d like at times, but they also created some advantages for themselves.”
I really dont' think we'll get rid of Golding. There is nothing out there we can upgrade... Schumann is popular choice but i don't think we can pull him.

Schumann and Muschamp are Co-DC at UGA. Anyone know who actually calls the plays on defense?

The text/quote following:
does not excuse the fact that this Golding-coached, veteran defense gave up 318 yards on the ground (at 7.4 yards / attempt) to a team that sits at the bottom of the SEC standings.
Additionally, these teams held Auburn to fewer points this year:
- San Jose State
- Penn State
- Missouri
- LSU
- UGA
- A&M
**Arkansas allowed 27 points; the same as UA.
That is absolutely horrendous and there should not be a single Alabama fan that continues to vouch for Golding at this point. I was optimistic before the season started that Golding would flip the script this year and field an outstanding defensive unit, but with his group’s performance this year, he has further solidified the idea that he has long overstayed his welcome in Tuscaloosa.

A play late in the Auburn game summed up Pete's defense and ILB coaching perfectly to me.
It was third and long -- maybe 12-15 yards. Ashford dropped back to pass, and I immediately noticed To'oto'o was spying him. Which I thought was exactly the right thing.
Ashford got pressure, and rolled to his right, then decided to cut upfield. To'oto'o was in position to make the play ... and overran it, getting caught up in the traffic to Ashford's right, closer to the boundary. Ashford cut back to his left, toward the middle of the field, and ran for the first down.
It's plays like that which created the "third and Golding" meme. Even if we have the right play call on defense, one or two people continually bust on their assignment. Saban harps on the players not doing what they're supposed to do, and he's right, in a sense ... but when players CONTINUALLY don't do what they're supposed to do, that's on coaching.
I was a Pete supporter the first couple of years, but I've seen the light. He's got to go.

If this really is the case, it doesn't say much for the state of defensive coaching in the country.
I'd have to believe there are upgrades over Golding we could pursue.

I think that is more we dont have a stud player on our side.
Their QB was just way faster than our linebacker. But he wasnt the only player that couldnt tackle him. I saw a def back stand there and dive at his feet and come up with air.
Cole Cublic said number 10 wasnt a great player when he transferred. He is not a thumper. And, he is like a lot of our players. They are good players but they are not great players. Cole isnt the only one that has said that. Gmac said the same thing a few weeks ago.

Now, we don't have studs on our defense? The way Bama recruits if there are no studs on our current defense we just need to close the whole damn program because that would be a massive misuse of a recruiting budget. In reality, we have plenty of studs on our defense but they are trapped in a terrible scheme helmed by a DC who simply isn't good enough for this level of football.
Also, we NO LONGER RECRUIT thumper types at ILB and that has been the case for several recruiting cycles. The Murphy kid who got some snaps on Saturday, he and Lawson appear to be our future ILBs, neither are thumper types. We want ILBs who would have been safeties in the past.

This guy must be kin to Golding.
Ryan Walters has Illinois' defense in the top 3 in the country with Michigan and Georgia. Read his bio and it's a lot of what we desire in a DC. LINK

I'm black. Golding is white. ??

Someone please tell me why Ryan Walters doesn't appear to be a good potential DC replacement. I'll wait.

Because he's likely to get HC job this year.

We'll see but I'd rather us hire guys who move onto head coaching jobs than guys who are inept.

I think that one of the big problems this season was Too'Too. He plays hard and gives a lot of effort, but I just don't think he is strong/athletic enough to be that guy at LB. He has trouble getting off of blocks and filling holes. Seems like it led to a lot of successful plays on the ground for the other team. That and our safeties have been pretty bad in coverage downfield.

For additional context here's a list of teams that held Auburn to less yards than we did.
Western Kentucky (10 yards less)
Texas A&M (180 yards less)
Mississippi State (64 yards less - Includes overtime)
Georgia (137 yards less)
Missouri (178 yards less)
San Jose State (17 yards less)
Mercer, San Jose State and Western Kentucky gave up less rushing yards to Auburn than we did... Again, Mercer, San Jose State and Western Kentucky. And those teams were playing at Auburn. That's an embarrassment.
Golding can not be allowed to come back.
