Clipped from an article:

quote:

The four-time SEC Coach of the Year (Bruce Pearl) is one of eight league head coaches to take a school to two-or-more NCAA Final Fours behind Adolph Rupp (6), Billy Donovan (4), John Calipari (4), Joe B. Hall (3), Rick Pitino (3), Nolan Richardson (3) and Dale Brown (2).

Dale Brown lost his F4 games by 22 and 11. This is a guy who had Shaq on his teams. He did this in 15 seasons.

Nolan Richardson lost the first game in one, then went 1-1 in title games. It took him 17 seasons to make 3 F4's.

Pitino went three times over 7 seasons, losing a semi, then went 1-1 in title games.

Joe B Hall also went three times over 13 seasons, making the title game 2x and going 1-1 in them. He was a Rupp player, assistant, and chosen successor.

Calipari went 4 times, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 over 15 seasons at UK.

Billy Donovan had a full rebuild on his hands at UF, though not to the degree BP faced at AU. UF had been to the F4 only two years prior. Donovan made a F4 and lost in the title game only four years in, but then had five straight years of losing to lower seeds and exiting early before Donovan's back to back titles with a team that returned completely intact (something that probably won't ever happen again) with the express purpose of repeating as NC's. Once BD got to the F4, he tended to win it, but they had a number of years of losing to lower seeds. Donovan was at UF 19 years.

You know the story on Rupp of course. The point is going to TWO Final Fours is rare for non-Kentucky coaches in the SEC. Only Donovan has done more than BP at a school with a similar history. Donovan was able to build faster in an era where his elite recruiting classes stayed 3 years or longer.

We've been to two F4s with BP in 10 seasons and are a blatant missed call (the VA double dribble of course) and some unfortunate injuries away from title game appearances, with a high likelihood of winning both of them had we gotten there. I can't recall another top team that went this far with critical player injuries. I didn't see much if any tape or braces in the games I watched this year outside of what was on our guys.

Where we're at now is not common outside of UK in terms of SEC. Outside the SEC, there aren't that many more who have done it, and only 13 coaches have made 3 F4's in the entire history of the F4. Enjoy the ride, and hope we maintain things after BP retires.

Coach Pearl is Auburn Basketball.

We’ve had players and moments, but now we expect to not only make the tournament, but we expect to make a deep run or a final four.

I hope we get a NCAA tournament championship soon, but it is amazing how far Coach Pearl has taken this program.

To me, much like Dye was at the beginning of my fandom, Pearl is Auburn athletics. His enthusiasm, his respect for the sport, how much he has always reached out to and sold his program to the fans and media... when the guy decides to stop coaching basketball, I hope they make him turn down the AD job. Right now I far, far prefer college basketball season to college football season and I never in my life thought that possible.

Why do you fans like losing and settling with final four appearances? Don’t you all have higher standards?

Edited with sarcasm font.

Everyone wanted the championship, but I think most of us were realistic. How many coaches out there are better that Bruce Pearl? Do we want go back to the wilderness like our football program is in and just throw darts every 3 or 4 years until we get a dream coach?

So many things can be true at once.

There is no coach I’d rather have than Bruce Pearl.

No season that ends in a Final Four appearance can truly be considered a failure.

For most schools (certainly Auburn among them), any season when you win your conference championship is a success.

A team that spends 8 weeks at #1 has to have a “National Championship or bust” mindset.

The team that is the #1 overall seed going into the tournament has to consider anything less than winning it all unsatisfying.

Contradictions. Yet all true.

I love Bruce and I’m proud of the guys on this team. And I certainly acknowledge where AU basketball has come from. But I just can’t look back at this outcome and think, “hot dog!” I’m left both happy and unsatisfied. So many things can be true at once.

Yep, all of this. In addition, I am just pissed that a 39-year old coach who worked under Pearl was able to beat him twice and win a national championship when BP has been coaching for 30+ years.

Love Bruce, will not be satisfied without a championship. Just have to keep assembling teams with that potential and hope one day it's our turn. We had a team that could get it done this year and were so so close to doing so.

I'm not mad at our guys because they didn't shoot it well that night or because a guy on the other team caught fire but it still sucks.

Have you seen what Auburn men's basketball looked like pre Pearl? I will take still being in the mix the last weekend of March Madness and be thrilled about it. Let's not become the spoiled brat basketball fans that we've all become with football and enjoy what we have

I agree that we were the number one seed overall because of what we did during the regular season but at the end of the year we were not the strongest team in the country I honestly believe the other three teams in the final four were a little bit better than us the final two three weeks of the season

I will never complain about an SEC Championship and Final Four appearance. Every year and every team is different. Every time I looked up Broome was banged up again. Not an excuse but reality. You get that deep in March you have to be lucky AND good. Maybe Pearl should have had some new wrinkles to break out down the stretch, but I will never question him as a coach. He is doing this at Auburn. There were 2 things I hoped, but never thought I'd see, happen in my lifetime. A football national championship and a basketball Final Four appearance. Seen both, one twice. For me anything else is gravy. That being said I do enjoy gravy

I also think CBM's wrist was messed up also during the tourney...seemed to be favoring it at times.

Can you all not see the sarcasm of a Scoper take in that post I made?

Should I have used sarcasm font?

Sometimes your sarcasm can be harder to detect from some other poster's. I didn't look back at anything you'd said previously in the thread either, may have sensed it better if I had.

You would have had to pay attention to scoper threads to detect it.
