That, I did not know. I guess I just always assumed it went from the Ale House to The Hound.
It went Ale House, to Strutting Duck Ale House, back to Ale House, then closed, then the Hound.
That whole 2 year period was fascinating to watch unfold.

And Pat, the owner, was actually found guilty yesterday. Appeal forthcoming.
And maybe I missed it, but no mention of Buffaloes? That was my go-to spot for more than a decade (98-closing).

He's arrogant enough to think he'll win the appeal, just like he was arrogant enough to think he'd win when he sued the city and was already telling everyone what he was going to do with the money.

Was my favorite place when I was a kid growing up because they had the trivia games on the tv.
Became even more of a favorite when I learned how good beer was.

Lots of bars have come and gone. I wasn't a big bar fly, but I was in Auburn for many years and go back often. I miss the following:
The Duck -- cold beer and darts were a good mix and I knew a lot of folks there, including the owner. It was Cheers-like in that sense.
The Supper Club -- Good place to hear a band and people watch as a rock and roll bar. Had good pizza in it's prior incarnation.
Harrys -- For both early and late drinkers. Maurice never left the place, I think.
The Casino / Tuckers -- Was there the night it closed for good. RIP.
The Blocked Punt -- Not a huge fan, went by another name.
Rusty's -- Wish I had discovered this place earlier. Great food, great prices, decent jukebox.
The Warehouse -- Had some good times there.
Torbett's -- More upscale than most, a decent place for an afterwork cocktail.
Stoker's -- Older regulars made this an early stop. Younger folks came in later. Would probably never have gone there had I not been dating a waitress there.
Denaro's -- Had some good bands at times. Downtown used to roll up the sidewalks at 5pm, so parking was no problem.

quote:The Stoker's lived four houses down from me growing up in Auburn. We lived on Peachtree Lane and they lived on Azalea Drive. Brandon Stoker was the closest in age to me but still a bit older, and there was an older brother and two sisters as well IIRC. I never went to Stoker's growing up or at AU but I've probably driven past it on Opelika Rd. 10,000 times.

I used to love late nights at Harry's. And if you didn't know, Mo passed away about a year and a half ago. He was In bad health.

You forgot one. It was The Bloodhound before it was just The Hound.

quote:Enjoyed many a cheap beer at "That Little Ol' French Place" as the sign on the roof said for awhile. I once asked Maurice why he named the place "Harry's". He replied, "We're in Alabama, how many people do you think would want to drink beer and shoot pool at a joint called 'Maurice's'?"

quote:"The Crust That Don't Rust" was their motto - whatever the hell that meant. I concur, they were a pretty good place, even though I didn't care for oysters which was one of their specialties.

quote:Went in there with my future bride and her co-workers from EAMC after they got off on the second shift. Turns out they had just changed ownership and had fired their kitchen staff so there was no food. We got kicked out when the Domino's driver arrived with our pizzas. We did manage to get away without paying for the drinks we'd just ordered though.
Torbett's -- More upscale than most, a decent place for an afterwork cocktail.
quote:I'd almost forgotten about Stoker's. They had a sandwich shop right next to campus as I recall, in addition to the restaurant on Opelika Rd.

Not familiar with Champs or John.
Live nearby Tavern House, are we in for an upgrade?

There were several Stoker brothers, Vee, Homer, Mac, Johnny? and one sister, Nell. I don't remember Brandon, but I knew Patsy. I think she was Mac's daughter, maybe? Not sure. Small world. I grew up on Loftin.

Well, both. I was a local and I was sort of there during those years. A good bit of those years I was in metro Atlanta, but came back very often. The Struttin' Duck came later. It was probably Moon's Deli in the early 80s. Stokers did have a sandwich shop near campus for a while. My future bride was a waitress at the restaurant when I met her, and a student.
What was the name of your band? Chances are I heard you play.

I could not name one current bar in operation. Seldom went to college bars when I was in school, and most of those I did go to have long since closed.

The name is familiar, but I can't place it offhand. Mainly, the bands I remember from that era were the Reds, the Keys, Sailor, and of course Telluride.
Don't recognize the place either, though I would guess it was the computer lab on campus.

quote:I lived on top of balcony bar for a couple of years. We would walk down with our own beer and hangout. They would have a “dub step/EDM” night every Monday which meant I got 0 sleep.
Balcony Bar during it's brief, ill-fated run had Shulbok for a while.
That spot had a lot of potential with the balcony overlooking Magnolia. The owner talked like they were making a killing solely off of football season.

There was a website for shulbok.com and I got in touch with the guy in May 2012. His son was the one who build these and went to Auburn and moved to Colorado. There is a table in the Oskar Blues brewery still in Colorado - the son has since passed away. He met me outside of Atlanta with a table and I think I paid $300 cash for it. I haven't played in a while but it's a fun memory of drinking Killian's Red at Amsterdam Cafe.
